re: People who don't understand how Trump negotiates calling Greenland deal a failure

Yeah it’s like people are new to Trump sometimes, as if we haven’t been seeing this for a decade
I was never actually worried about us invading Greenland or a hot war with Iran. I have other concerns, but not those ones

I don't see how he got a better deal than if he just went to the Danes and asked. The maximalist approach spent significant US soft power for ultimately very little gain.

1) Denmark must continue paying the Greenland population 600 million dollars per year.

But at what cost? I can't think of any point in at least the last few decades+ that we've had worse relations with what are supposed to be our closest allies.
He may get a marginally better deal by appearing as an unpredictable and aggressive, but there's a reason why companies have "goodwill" as a line item on accounting balance sheets.

He anchors high and does his public commentary. I’m sure the news will frame it as a compromise, but he likely got what he was targeting behind the scenes.

A lot of posters on this board were all for invading Greenland.
I love what we did in Venezuela, but that was a surgical extraction of a communist leader and an event that was celebrated by the Venezuelan people. Greenland would be against an ally and against the wishes of the people of Greenland.

I used to tell all my friends i was gonna play in the MLB.
After high school when I didnt get any offers to play in college they laughed at me, but the joke was on them. My actual goal was just to play high school ball the whole time.

I can't say exactly how many considering how much Greenland talk there's been, but here's at least 3 that I quickly found

To your point, a couple of those posts haven't gotten good reception since, but they're out there.

Three to five years from now, these same people will be claiming they did this deal and not Trump.

Sounds like a good deal if there are investors for the minerals.
American companies are already working on mineral projects in Greenland. This “deal” is the same one that was made over 70 years ago…
I mean seriously, one of the points is “access to the arctic circle”. Do any of you actually believe we didn’t already have access to the arctic circle? I mean, cmon lol.

He didn’t have to puff up his chest and go on for years about acquiring Greenland with full title and control to simply reach an agreement for more bases. That was always available if he had simply asked.
The agreement is for much more than just building bases.
