Lane Kiffin should have been the hire to begin with.

Woodward almost burned it down

Woodward handcuffed BK some. But the hiring of Lane energized the donor base so Lane is getting more support. Can’t say how much more though.

In fairness to BK, the portal was never as prevalent as it is now. Good riddance though

BK didn't excite the boosters like Kiffin. Plus players like Kiffin more.

Nah.

Combination of Woodward holding the purse strings too tight for the first couple years and coupled with the fact that some of the bigger boosters didn’t support Scott or Brian.

Allegedly when Landry stepped in it a bit at the start of this thing he then had to lobby some of the oil and political machine behind it so there is more money/support than there has been in years.

I suggested it way back then, and I was downvoted like crazy for it.

Yeah I know he should have stfu but Landry is absolutely trying to help LSU as much as he can.

Only because he involved himself and tied his political future to the success of the program. If they fell flat on the coach hire and suffered next year everyone would have blamed him.

But hey; I’ll take the win either way. Glad it benefited the program I love at the end of the day. But still bad politics on the Governors part (IMO).

He did also say because of the big buyout on BK that LSU would have to be moderate (or something to that ilk) in the new hire.

JBE wasn’t going to assist with LA businesses to support NIL. If you can’t see Landry is a huge net win for LSU you are blind.

Relative to the time (2022) BK signed a "lot" of transfers in his first season to replace a depleted roster (from a numbers perspective). In 2022 teams weren't signing 30, 40, 50 transfers. The most that year were in the low 20's. LSU signed 15. LSU also signed only 17 HS recruits this year. That's the fewest since 2022 and one of the smallest classes in decades.

The point is I think this was "available" to BK, it's just not how he chose to build his rosters. Kiffin was an early adopter of going heavy in the portal to build his rosters. But that was probably more out of necessity/strategy than anything else given he assumed (correctly) Ole Miss was never going to compete with the big boys in HS recruiting.

It will be interesting to see how reliant on the portal Kiffin remains now that he is at one of the "big boys" in HS recruiting.

I think bk thought we didnt need as many guys out of the portal, which we didnt based on the number of players on the roster. he fricked up by not going after more o line.

let's not pretend he didnt have quality over quantity in the portal last season though.

BK seems to have the mentality that he was not going to get into a bidding war for players is admirable. That attitude is why he got fired and Dabo is on the hot seat.

No

Woodward wouldn't allow this much to be spent on Football as he wanted the wealth 'spread more fairly' around

I heard BK talked to a group of donors about "graduating champions" and two of them literally fell asleep

The NIL money available to him is why he came to LSU. LSU, Florida and Ole Piss were all offering about the same salary. He said the NIL pot of money was nowhere near what LSU was offering. I don’t know if he got the big pot because Verge knew he had to basically put together a roster. I’m curious if he will have the same budget next year. I hope he does
