Try 3 or 4 times a week! You will have the same results, from my experience

Bobby Jones once said, "I have never understood why I cannot play well every time out."

Golf sometimes defies logic.

One of my buddies has been playing for 25+ years and still isn't very good.

He has a horrible swing.

It’s golf people go through highs and lows. I’ve been currently struggling with irons. Beginning of last year I was at a 9.9 handicap it jumped up to nearly a twelve and since I’ve starting stepping back and working on a few things I’ve managed to get it back down to 10.3 as of today. Also when I say stepping back I’m not playing less golf I’m not playing as many serious rounds. I play a lot of just 9 holes rounds preferably the last tee time and work on things dropping multiple balls hitting a bunch of shots and not worrying about score. Probably have 100 plus rounds last year and I didn’t score but maybe half of them.. I think people tend to press to hard at this game wanting to get better and this game will press back. So don’t let it frustrate you focus on where you think you’re dropping the most strokes and focus on that and see where it leads. Hell my goal is to dip closer to 5-6 handicap range by end of summer. But I just have to remind myself it’s a process

Playing golf & working on your game are two VERY different things.

Work on your game.

I manage a high end private club out west…. Most of my members never ever improve and the play 7 days a week. Most are relatively cheap when it comes to lessons or they are stubborn and do not want to make changes necessary to get better. So they swing the club 700 times a weak in an improper manner and basically they ingrain a bad swing. And they get worse over time. Sure they can sometimes harness the high weak slice and play well but most of the time, bad players want to overcome their bad tendencies, but they do not know how and they continue to make the same bad swings a habit

If all that you do is exercise bad habits, you’re gonna get bad results.

Pretty easy, actually…

I have tried tons of stuff to remedy my problems.. I can’t hit driver that far, but I use to hit it straight, now I’m slicing it.. I was hitting irons on, now not so much… so frustrating.. I’ve tried different swings. Guess I need to get more lessons or just drink more out there

Brian Kelly played twice a week for four years and played a few strokes above bogey golf, so there’s that.

This is a fool’s errand but I’m going to give it a try.
To answer the question it is important to make a few things clear right up front;
1) The human brain is incredibly good a reaching a goal. Your subconscious mind will come up w multiple ways to solve a problem, if necessary.
2) Everyone, and I mean everyone will have technique issues while playing golf. This includes Tour players-they often will readily tell you what their technique issues are and how they try and combat them.
3) As a recreational player your brain piles one compensation on top if another in an attempt to get the ball going towards the target.
-So, finally to the direct answer.
The more golf you play w bad technique the more complex these compensations become until this system just crashes into pure chaos. The worst is when people get the shanks. That shite is painful. It’s basically the athletic equivalent of developing a stutter.
ONLY SOLUTION: FIND A GOOD GOLF INSTRUCTOR AND VISIT HIM OFTEN!!

So, as a follow up. You say you took a few lessons.
What did the guy tell you to do?
-Ball position? Forward or back?
-Weight? Front foot or back foot?
-Have you successfully been able to develop a right to left ball flight?
-Do you still top it or do you get the “fats”?
I’m genuinely curious so will answer if you do.

Man, I'm in a bad place right now as well. I could have broken my clubs practicing today. I started up again this summer and practiced a lot. Got several lessons. Got a lot better. Started on a few 9 hole rounds in August playing bogey golf. I was very happy. Hitting greens and fairways relatively regularly. Played a few more rounds and joined a club. Got a little better and had 13.9 handicap. Since Christmas, I feel like Tin Cup when he got the shanks. I get in my head to fix it and it only makes everything worse. I didn't even know it was possible to slice a 9 iron 40 yards. I will be getting lessons as soon as my schedule allows.

Maybe it’s a physical issue. Tight hips. Decreased flexibility. These are just a few things it could be. Decreased flexibility and weak core are my biggest challenges.

It’s late over here so this will be my last input for now.
BALL POSITION
-this is the most commonly misunderstood element that I see on a daily basis.
When you practice, keep the ball left of center for every club. If you can’t hit it from there then put it on a tee and try some more.
If you’re on the course and don’t feel comfortable w it there then play it directly across from your sternum.
BUT AVOID AT ALL COST, IF POSSIBLE, HAVING THE BALL BEHIND YOUR STERNUM.
Happy hunting….

Why? I play wedges back in my stance all the time. Is that a huge mistake?

Ok, certainly w a wedge the results can be ok but the player will usually not develop the correct concept.
1) Try hitting a half wedge w the ball slightly left of your sternum.
2) I’ll predict you will start the ball left.
3) To develop your game further it’s important for you to understand…….why is that??

Answer: Your swing is probably too steep. Your prob need to swing more inside-out.

I only took two lessons, I didn’t like his style) I guess.. I would just show up and start hitting balls with a 8,9 iron and he would film behind and show me on the screen what I was doing wrong, which was fine, but he didn’t get technical enough I guess. Never looked at my grip or etc.. never hit my driver in those two lessons.. and he didn’t put me on a schedule, he was more like come back whenever I want kind of deal…

My issue is I’ll think I made good progress, let’s say with irons one week and then the next time I play I’m hitting them fat, or their not going far or very high..
But irons aren’t my biggest problem it’s the driver putting me in bad spots, I dont hit it that far but every now and then and now I’m slicing it more than I did..
I then go to you tube, think I find the eureka moment and get even more screwed up or disappointed when it fails

-If you’re still slicing w a driver then you have to address the slice issues first.
If you don’t slice w your irons it’s just because of the higher amount of backspin. You still have a slice swing. I mean, really, how the hell can you slice a nine-iron?
Anyway, learn to hit a hook at all costs.
So, difficult to fix in this forum.
You took a couple of lessons but didn’t follow up. Find another golf instructor that you click with mentally. It’s your only chance.

Then you need to tell him this if he's the only viable option in your area. I enjoy a coach who talks to me about why I'm there for 10 minutes while I warm up.
