Under the current NIL/transfer portal model, it's only a matter of time before it collapses and fans find different outlets to spend their time and money on.

As an LSU fan living in another state, I take great pride in cheering for my home state, but I have to admit that passion is quickly waning. In years past, wearing that LSU jersey meant something, but knowing that no longer exists and players are only wearing that jersey for a paycheck, I've also lost interest. Up until this year, if LSU was on TV, I would rearrange my schedule to make sure I didn't miss the game. This year there were three or four TV games I didn't watch, and truthfully, it didn't bother me. Up until five years ago, I would go to 2/3 games a year, but I now have zero interest and I'm fine if I never go to another game.

Over the years, the reason college football has been so successful was the connection between the fans and the team. Whether you attended that school or grew up in the state, you took great pride in wearing your team's colors because it meant something.

Moving forward, it will be interesting to see how or if cfb survives. The relationship between cfb and the fans is like a marriage and when one party isn't happy, they move on to greener pastures. For me, cheering for a new group of strangers every year that couldn't care less about LSU isn't something I want to be a part of.

My interest or level of caring about college football has definitely gone down over the years because of NIL, but at the end of the day, I’ll always bleed purple and gold.

These days half of the time, I don’t know who just made the tackle or caught the ball.
That used to never be the case

don’t know why you’re getting downvoted, everything you said is accurate.

I still watch games, but my emotional attachment to LSU, and college football in general, is dramatically less than a few years ago. And i know i’m not alone.

College football is broken.

I don’t know half the players anymore. It’s not as fun. You don’t get excited about a HS commitment anymore. Won’t afford to go soon either.

I used to know a huge chunk of the roster each season. Now I know like 20-30 guys. It’s a little disappointing to not be able to follow guys’ development and it’s disappointing to know that they don’t care about LSU and just want to get paid, but at the end of the day I’m going to support the three letters and the purple and gold, doesn’t matter so much who wears them as long as they win.

You cheer for the uniforms and the past teams. “College” teams are nothing more than mercenaries, if they could get $1.00 more from another team, they will leave.

You make college football player professionals, you have a really serious problem because we already have a professional football league that is comprehensively superior from an on-field perspective. You used to watch college football for the passion and pride of the team in the institution. Now, if it is just going to be pro football lite, it has no meaning. I believe college football will continue to decline in relevance while the NFL will continue to ascend to new heights of dominance.

My interest in CFB is higher than ever but my love for it has greatly diminished. It's not NIL so much as it's the transfer portal. The game is an absolute mess right now.

You take great pride in your home state, just not enough to actually stay. But you don’t like that players might leave for a better opportunity?

Do you want to guess how much college football viewership has dropped?

No.

CFB that grew to become the greatest sport on earth was marked by traditions and a continuum between school-players-team. That's gone. What emerges on the other side is TBD.

What were seeing now is an interim stage but you're capturing the dissonant vibes.

Depends where you live. The inbreds here (AL) will pull for Alabama regardless. Of course for most it is their only source of self-identity. The Auburn fans are much more tolerable.
