They don't attack humans by choice, they attack prey. If you're old, or young, and especially if you turn your back, their 100% instinct is to get after it. Farmers in regions of India (the country) would wear essentially human Halloween masks on the backs of their heads to avoid attacks, and it mostly works. I watched this at big cat sanctuaries in Indiana (the state) hanging back from the tour group. You can see this in house cats. If they think they have the drop, they can't help it.
But again, guns don't save lives. Hiking in the mountains with bears and cats, and your strategy as a trans identifying pink haired ski enthusiast is to find rocks around you and throw them?

I don’t live in Co., but my family has had a property in Eagle Co. for 45 years and to solo hike/ ski/ c.c. ski at this time of year is suicidal. Mountain Lions, like every cat, including domesticated house cats are opportunistic especially when prey becomes scarce or quantifiably more difficult to kill.
The lion population in Colorado has exponentially exploded in the last 2 decades, when it was a rarity to ever have an encounter in the 80’s & 90’s it’s a legitimate concern to have an encounter or visual if you enjoy the backcountry.

The incident is being investigated as a suspected fatal mountain lion attack. As far as CPW knows, the woman was hiking alone.

I think most of the outdoors community (anecdotally) thinks the backcountry only exists in Alaska or "somewhere else" than their ski or hiking trail. They don't get that if you go 30 yards off the path of human scent, animals will take the opportunity.
That said, my boy in Denver got a Judge from his girlfriend because they're always van camping and skiing.

You know the term “ loaded for bear”, my folks close friends’ family own an outfitting company half way between Silverthorne & Kremmling Co. and guide the Williams Fork Range, truly wild backcountry Co.. As a matter of fact, that’s where the initial wolf pack in Colorado was re-established.
From a downed pack animal to personal protection Colorado will kill you just off a beaten path.
