Montgomery is one of the most overrated generals in history. Market Garden was a disaster.

Patton was murdered.

The only reason why Montgomery wasn't fired in 1945 is because he was quite literally Britain's only big name war hero. The optics would have been terrible.

Technically suicided, but they would have murdered him and probably his wife and son if he hadn't done what they wanted.

Eisenhower actually accepted his resignation. Sadly Monty was only bluffing. Resignation would have save many US airborne lives.

I have a special place in my heart for this clip because of the British musicians playing Scotland the Brave.

When at the Citadel we used to march off the parade deck on Friday afternoon dress parade to Scotland the Brave. My wife and I also used it as the processional at our wedding and it's her ringtone on my phone. Needless to say, I like that song...

I always chuckle when it fades out when they see the Americans and again when the US musicians crank up the Stars and Stripes Forever over the top of it...

Churchill understood how warfare had changed. Montgomery was a fossil similar to the French generals in 1939.

He had a lot of cred with Churchill and to a lesser extent Eisenhower because of El Alamein and driving the Germans back across N. Africa.

Patton came in late to the N. African campaign and delivered the final blow to Rommel.

Beyond that Patton is a superior general

It could be argued that Montgomery’s victory in N. Africa wasn’t due to his tactical superiority over Rommel but other factors. I would say it was largely due to superior allied intelligence (decoding Enigma let Monty and the Britts know precise German troop strength and movement), along with a clear advantage in equipment and supplies. This assured the British victory over the Axis forces in N. Africa, not Monty's military prowess.

Charles de Gaulle was a military visionary who does not fit this description.

It’s not that he was overrated; it’s that he had different goals. The British were often appalled at the casualties Americans would accept. The Rhine crossing was an exception in that there were few casualties. British doctrine then was similar to American doctrine now. Under those doctrines, Montgomery was a good general. Apparently arrogant as hell, though.

The object of war is not to die for your country but to make the other bastard die for his.

That's true overall, but still Montgomery had to execute the strategy which he did in N. Africa. But beyond N. Africa Monty's record is wanting at best. You could say that he did what he had to do in Sicily as well. He did fight his way to Messina.....Patton did a hell of a strategic move.....and Patton did have a better PR team.

But once you get to France post Normandy, it's really all Patton, largely. Market Garden wan an objective failure, but you could say that Monty had the Germans expend a lot of resources in what was essentially draw at the time.
