Do you take the mostly (90%) interstate route or the route that is ~50% interstate with some state highways, but also passing through some small town? Both routes are 7.5 hrs. The mostly interstate state route is 70 miles longer, but goes out the way for the direction needing to travel. The smaller highway/towns route seems more efficient. I’ve done both in the past. I do like the lesser mileage routes but I don’t like the risk of speed traps in small towns and potential of getting stuck behind a slow (less than speed limit) driver.

probably the interstate because I can go faster and not have to worry about red lights and shite.

Interstate.

Predictable exits and amenities, steady rate of travel.

US highways if possible. I find interstates too mind numbing

I love east Texas on the back roads

It depends on where. I can drive state roads from Houston to DFW and average over 90mph looking at cows, wind turbines, and the occasional traffic. I-45 is shorter, but is an enraging experience.

Speed traps are pretty easy to avoid in small towns in Texas. I've memorized where they are on my usual route.

It depends. If the interstate route is going through any major cities, I will attempt to avoid it.

For example, I almost always take HWY 90 to New Orleans from Lafayette, rather than taking I-10 through Baton Rouge.

If it’s the same time, I take the route least likely to cause trouble.

70 miles out the way is really out of the way. 70 more miles that could have a wreck. Would likely never make that choice.

But you guys are smarter than the travel board. Haha. I honestly did not realize there was a travel board.

Thanks for all the pointers. I’ll probably take the shorter route. 70 miles is too much. If the difference was <20-30 miles, I’d probably do the interstate option.

I-75 in SW Florida is almost completely straight, no hills, 3 lanes in some parts and an absolute deathtrap. I avoid the interstate as much as possible. A jaunt to Sarasota or Tampa, maybe, but Orlando is back roads. I-4 is a traffic nightmare.

It takes almost 5 hours to get to Georgia and 7.5 to get to Alabama, so we are flying anywhere we go.

Whatever waze says for highway stuff. I have had it taken the highway going there and through small towns on the way back.

I found Smokey the Bear's grave site traveling back roads, I always thought he was made up, but he was a real bear cub rescued during a forest fire, once he healed up he live his life out in the zoo in DC.

It depends... generally I plug in the destination and go whatever route is fastest but I will also avoid big city interstates if the timing is similar on back roads. Less chance of a wreck or traffic jam that the map hasn't picked up yet.

If it's territory I don't know, I'll watch traffic for a week during rush hours before we travel.
Some of our better options have been the 'old' US highway system that were four laned and are a county or two away from interstates. They mostly lack the big trucks and have county seats with restaurants and (if there are no casinos nearby) reasonably prices lodgings.

Interstate is better but not 70 miles out of the way better.

Taking the route that avoids major cities is always a plus, only major city that I can't avoid on my route is St. Louis but thankfully we rarely hit it during rush hour.

Smaller roads. I stay off freeways whenever possible.
You'll get better scenery, and folks won't be driving as fast.

Drawback is that hotel bathrooms are harder to find.
