Idea for addressing home afforability
Posted on 12/23/25 at 1:00 pm

- Eliminate property taxes for primary residences
- Increase property taxes for secondary residences (esp SFHs)
- Increase subsidies for first-time home buyers
- Increase scrutiny and penalties for fraud
Let's say a state without any areas having a super tight rental market enacted these changes. Would this approach solve more problems than it creates? Would renters suffer too much?

- Increase subsidies for first-time home buyers

Stop the federal gov't from importing millions of illegals who they then subsidize or outright pay for their housing. Fannie Mae and orgs under blackrock and blackstone who rent from their staggering inventory ultimately facilitate a large portion of this for the Marxist feds.

ETA: ah the classic downvote in lieu of a response when obvious bullshite is questioned

Or stop trying to push people into single family homes and embrace density. Eliminate zoning restrictions

my sister in law and her fiance are putting an offer on a 10 year old 1350 sqft house thats listed for 225k. they're first time buyers.
i'd hate be a first time buyer in this market.

Mass deportations
Increase the ability of LE and the judicial system to fight crime
Get shitty kids out of schools
Limit institutional ownership of single family housing
I truly believe that the state of public education is a MASSIVE factor. Yes, affordable housing exists for young couples… but can they send their kids to the local schools without worrying about them getting shanked?

quote:That sounds about right. We bought a 1450sqft in 2023 for $245k and "bought down" to a 5.99% rate.

My buddy who bought in 2016 likes to bitch about his note every once in a while and it makes his neck look really strangleable

The most common sense option is the most unpopular and will never happen, eliminate the mortgage interest deduction.
It makes no sense, it’s just a taxpayer funded gov handout from non home owners to home owners. All it does is reset the housing market (w higher prices).
I’ve personally benefited tremendously from it (wife and I have owned 3 different homes so far, saved tons) so it’d be a bummer to see it go, but let’s not pretend it makes any sense.

Eliminate all real estate taxes in personal residential ownership, whether 1st or 2nd. Personal owned property should be tax free.
But this would only make it more valuable and some don't like this concept of real estate wealth, and would rather rent. Tax free assets are valuable.
Affordability? Eliminate income tax and that money can be diverted to house purchases. Build America one house and family at a time.

seems a little steep in my opinion. AC will need replacing in 5-ish years, 8 years if they're lucky. not much of a yard to speak of, but that's personal preference i guess.

Here's a thought. Over-population is..and will continue to be the problem.
The supply of available land is shrinking, and the population is growing. This will be a problem as long as the population keeps exponentially growing.

Gizmo- how about no property taxes after home is paid off AND you’ve lived in it for 20 years. I say that because I realize that I will never ever truly own my home as long as the government can tax me on it.

One of the few really big breaks in my life was building in 2019 when I got my 2.5% interest rate locked in. I thank my lucky stars for that.

Totally agree that is the #1 factor. Bought a house last year for the first time with kids, and school districts were the #1 deciding factor. Could easily get more bang for your buck in a shittier district, but that wasn't a sacrifice we were willing to make.

All this helps achieve that goal.

Arguably don't think that matters for anyone middle class or above. The ones, and from your post history I know you know this, that impact the good housing inventory the most are here legally.

Or a novel concept, the government shouldn't be guaranteeing any type of loan, whether it be housing, student, small business, etc.
