Cool Hand Luke has entered the chat. Solitary confinement for those who can't communicate.

While some parents were shocked, others say the school has a history of mistreatment and are demanding action to improve conditions for their children.
Thomas Hathaway, a parent from the Saint Regis Mohawk Reservation at Akwesasne, said his partially non-verbal son Connor, 8, was put inside the box.

Photos of a wooden box, allegedly used for student "time outs" at an elementary school in Akwesasne, drew shock and anger from parents this week and have prompted an investigation by the school district.
Akwesasne Mohawk Territory, near Cornwall, Ont., straddles the Ontario, Quebec and New York state border. St. Regis Mohawk School is a kindergarten to Grade 5 school on the U.S. side, and is one of four schools in the Salmon River Central School District.
Chrissy Jacobs, a resident of Akwesasne and a former Salmon River Central School District board member, posted the photos to Facebook Monday after they were sent to her by a teacher who’d recently resigned from the school.
A statement published to the school district's social media on Monday attributed to Superintendent Stanley Harper said the box depicted in the photos had not been used at St. Regis school and that the district had previously decided not to use that specific device.
Jacobs said four parents came forward at a community meeting on Tuesday night who said their children had "identified the box and said they were put in that box." Jacobs said they went to the police.

They padded the box. What's the problem?

I don't necessarily see an outrageous problem... if a special needs kid is having a meltdown, sometimes a bland, small, safe space can help them soothe.
If it's being used punitively rather than as a sensory deprivation help- that's wrong.
The real issue is in not having facilities especially for special needs kids- mainstreaming them is a disservice to the kid, the classroom and the teachers and administrators.

Any man loses his spoon........spends the night in tha box.

They can always just keep their special needs kid at home and raise them.
I was locked in a closet by teachers back in the day for acting up. Tough love needs to return.

Why should they? There was some pretty egregious stuff done within the lifespan of some older folks who are still alive.

Airholes and padding. It’s like a stay at the Ritz.

I know this was on our side of the border
But the Canadian obsession with indigenous issues - including lily-white Canadians taking on either victim or perpetrator roles when they're far removed from either - is insane. The entire residential school fiasco being perhaps the most ridiculous of it.

When they spazz out, they get locked in the box.
It’s not everyone else’s fault they flip out and tear shite up.
At least they aren’t using extension cords or tasers

How?
If not for colonization, they'd at best be living like people in Mongolia.
They would never advance if not for us Europeans.

My 4th grade teacher duct taped a kid to his desk cause he wouldn’t stop getting up during class. Good luck with that now.

I have a cousin whose daughter is autistic. My uncle built a “play house” for her very similar to that box.
Fully enclosed, no windows, just a door to get in and out. That child spends the majority of her time in there, on her own accord.
She is in that thing substantially more than she is out of it.

Seriously?
If aliens from outer space landed tomorrow, killed half of us and herded the rest of us into camps to "advance our society." How would you feel about that?
We may have modernized them but none of them wanted to be modernized at the time.
