During the court hearing, public defender Kevin Robinson immediately raised what he described as defendant Fale Pea’s longstanding struggles with mental health.
“I have worked with Ms. Pea briefly before… there’s a long history of findings of incompetence, and the symptoms that have been noted before I have observed personally today,” he told the judge. Pea’s charging documents identify Pea as a man; however, Robinson referred to Pea using she/her pronouns Thursday morning.
Although the charging documents do not reference mental health evaluations, they outline Pea’s extensive involvement with the criminal legal system. According to the filing, Pea has a prior conviction for second-degree assault from 2011 and multiple misdemeanor assault convictions in 2024, 2023 and 2020.
The documents describe Friday’s assault as “violent, random and wholly unjustified.”
