I love Robin Williams and I enjoy this movie. I am capable of enjoying a movie for what it is and not overthinking it. However if you do really think about Williams character, he is an idiot. Everything he did as Mrs. Doubtfire, he could have done as himself. He could have become more responsible, learned to cook, clean. He could have been a better disciplinarian with his children. Had he done all that as himself instead of Doubtfire, he may have even won his wife back.

Yeah but he didn’t know he could do all that until he had to pretend to be someone else

There is another thread on this, diving deep into 2 main arguments :

1. He was a man child who refused to grow up, help with the children and take on any responsibility.
2. Sally Fields was the true villian for divorcing him and taking his children away from him.

I think he was just wanted to put on drag and prance around.

Without Mrs. Doubtfire you might not have the nutty professor.

Where as in contrast, Dustin Hoffman dressed up as a woman and did exactly what Jessica Lange said she wanted men to do. And what did it get him? ? A slap in the face.

He wouldn't have had nearly as much time with the kids. The whole reason for creating Mrs. Doubtfire was because bitch arse Sally Field wouldn't let him babysit the kids as their dad just to spite him even though it would have not only saved money but also given the children valuable time with their father.

He was a child himself...so in a way Mrs. Doubfire raised him into the man/dad he had and needed to be for his kids.

It’s great that he loves his kids and wants to be around them. But yeah, the older I get the more I can see/understand where Miranda was coming from. Was she a bitch and overbearing at times? Sure. Should she have taken the kids away from him to get back at him? No.

But she described to him that she never got to spend time with the kids because he was always messing something up or leaving a mess for her to clean up whenever she would get home from work. On top of him being in between jobs all the time.

So I can see why she would have been resentful and been fed up with him.

Sure but then he wouldn't get to dress like a woman and make jokes about his tits.

Yeah but she's still a bitch who was having an emotional affair-turned-relationship with Stu while still married. She wouldn't have been going out with Stu so soon after the divorce if they hadn't already been hooking up, even though Stu comes across as an Aggie IMO. You would think that would have been taken into account in the initial custody ruling.

ETA: I’m definitely misremembering the timeline

No she didn’t. She never even saw Stu in person until after she had filed for divorce. He called into her office at the beginning and left her a message that he was wanting her for one of his projects. And even then after he came on to her, she stopped him and said she was currently going through a divorce.

I mean he brought a full on petting zoo in their house. Not sure to many wives that let that slide.

Like how did Sally Fields not take one look at Mrs. Doubtfire and say "She looks just like my ex husband wearing old lady makeup." And quickly follow that up with "Dammit, Daniel! You pulling shite like this is why we divorced!"

but it took the divorce to mature him up and at that point he had restricted time.

he could have done these things without it though. you are right. i also think he didn't like the idea of a stranger doing these things for his family.

Watching this scene is especially hilarious today. Hits different than 30 years ago.

I watched this one with the kids a couple years ago and it holds up really well. Just a great movie all around.
