Some of you may remember my story from almost exactly 5 years ago where my newborn daughter had to have surgery at 7 weeks old to remove a cyst that was blocking her windpipe. Most of you likely don't. Either way, I've linked it below for reference. Don't worry, there is a happy ending.

Original Post from 2020

To me, that post was one of those examples where this board, and all the loveable assholes within, come together with prayer, encouragement, and just general good intentions to lift up the spirits of fellow Tigers who may be going through a tough time in life.

Sharing my story and receiving all the encouragement that followed really meant a lot to me and is a big reason that I think most of us continue to post here going into our middle aged years. This really is a unique community that I'm happy to be part of.

Anyway, that baby girl in the link posted is recently 5 years old, and on the week of her 5 year surgery anniversary, she hit a HUGE milestone last night. Baby girl lost her first tooth!

My wife videoed me pulling it out, and now we will forever have the video of our last first tooth experience. No Tears, absolute bravest little girl in the world. Her eyes lit up and got so wide when it came out. She grabbed the tooth and ran to show her big brother who was equally as excited and proud of her. She spent the rest of the evening proclaiming what a Big Girl she is now.

That is the part that got me feeling very happy sad as I laid down to bed last night. My baby girl is not a baby anymore. That young kid age is all but over. Mine are 8 and 5 now. They're smart, increasingly independent, growing more and more mature by the day. Those early years can be so tough at times, but looking back on them, I never want them to end.

I think back 5 years to how we were so incredibly close to losing this sweet girl, and here she is today; happy, healthy, and so vibrantly full of life that I can't help but smile just thinking about it. I want to continue to strive every day to show up the best that I can for them and I hope she always looks at me with the love and excitement as she did last night when that tooth popped out.

Maybe it's the Christmas season that evokes these feelings. Maybe its her surgery anniversary and life milestones piling on, but I just had one of those moments last night and needed an outlet to share. Sorry for rambling.

On a related note, my 5yo somehow picked up the term ‘Real Bitch’ (even though he doesn’t know what it means)

And last night when my wife was getting on to him for making a mess with legos he proceeded to say ‘Are you being a real bitch right now?’

I almost spit out my seltzer. I was certain he was about to lose his first tooth me

This post warms my heart. You have a beautiful daughter. As the father of a daughter who’s in her senior year of high school, I makes me miss the days you’re living now.

One warning though, start saving up now because baby girls become quite expensive the older they get, especially if they know they’ve got you wrapped around their finger.

we went to a christmas party last night with our two kids and on the way back we were singing the 12 yats of christmas having a great time. It hit me how i did not really have that as a kid as my parents were divorced and i always hated the holidays. feeling very thankful this morning.

I tried to explain what it's like having small kids during the holidays to a few guys at work that are in the "I'm never having kids" club. They're both married. One has step kids in their 20s. The other couple chose to not have kids. I just told them it's something I can't explain. You just have to feel it.

My son is 7 and in prime "Christmas magic" mode. He looks forward to the elf every morning. He thinks the Santa we saw last weekend was the real one because he was fat and had a real reindeer. Seeing this through a child's eyes is one of our greatest gifts we will ever be given. It just sucks the only get 9-11 years of it before the world decided to shite on that magic.

Thanks.

We have been lucky that there aren't many residual effects from her surgery.

She has been scoped yearly to ensure there is no regrowth, and haven't seen any evidence of it yet.

The only lingering thing is that she has partial hearing loss in her left ear (could be from the location of where the cyst was growing, or could be totally unrelated, we don't know for sure) but you would never know by talking to her. It hasn't delayed her speech at all, which was always our big concern.

Thanks for sharing, OP. Just a few days ago I rummaged through a box of old documents, two dollar bills and dollar coins and found a little Ziplock baggie containing a few of my daughter's baby teeth and a letter she wrote to the tooth fairy apologizing for having misplaced one. Saving things like that can bring back good memories. I sometimes wish we could share stories about the funny things that our kids did but there are a few folks around here who want to be edgy and snipe at other posters.

Louisiana. We care and take care of each other more than other places. Not from here? Embrace Louisiana and the culture, and Louisiana will embrace you back and you become one of us. If you don’t, you’ll never succeed here.
