This happened to my team in HS. Our captain was too stupid to understand deferring.

I know we did vs. Texas A&M in Tiger Stadium when Curly Hallman was the coach. I was there.

Officials should not have let this happen.

Yes. We won the toss and our captain (Brady James, I think) demanded that we wanted to kick. Even the ref tried to talk him out of it.

ETA it was under Nick not Les.

I could totally have seen this happening under Kelly where we misunderstand what deferring means and BK looks all confused, red faced and angry screaming at everyone around him on the sideline. In the post game press conference he’d be asked about it and say something like “Loook, it’s semantics, right? We didn’t know and that’s on us as coaches.”

Sarcasm?

I'll spell it out, if not.

If you win the toss, you can accept the right to decide then or "defer", meaning you'll get to pick to start the second half.

If you decide with the toss, unless you want to kickoff both halfs, you elect to receive. If you want to kickoff to start the game, you defer to the other team, because THEY don't want to kickoff both halfs, they will elect to receive.

It used to be possible. My memory was pretty good. MSU won and deferred. Brady James chose to receive.

Now officials don’t give the option. Whoever has the choice is automatically deemed to receive. Used to you actually had to say what choice you were exercising.

Mississippi State won the toss and deferred to LSU. However Tigers team captain Bradie James elected to kickoff rather than receive, costing the Tigers a possession to start the half. The last time the Tigers were a victim of this miscue was in the Curly Hallman era, and, ironically, Hallman was on the sidelines as the defensive backs coach on Saturday.

No sarcasm needed. It’s not possible to kickoff to start both halves….unless every person in the stadium is retarded and somehow misses the fact that your team kicked off to start the 1st quarter.

Your options when you win the toss are to receive or defer. If you defer to the second half and the opposing team then choose to receive or defend a specific goal and kick. If the winner chooses to kick, the team that deferred still has the option to receive in the second half, so the same team will have to kick off again.

Incorrect.

Or, perhaps, they know the rules.

we saw it with our own eyes.

not sure what was the bigger brain fart, demanding to kick off or X-man downing a kick off on the 1 inch line.
