Karst cartography. Limestone bedrock eroded by a high water table leaves behind void spaces that empty out as the water table falls. The water table can decline naturally via continental uplift or prolonged drought, but frequently occurs due to humans pumping out underwater aquifers for irrigation. When those voids dry out, the rock above isn’t strong enough to support the weight on the surface, leading to it collapsing into the void: voila, sinkhole.
This is extremely common in Florida. In fact, many of Florida’s circular lakes were formed inside sinkholes.

I’m still mad I watched two seasons of that show with the time traveling hole on Josh brolin’s land in Wyoming wher the plot was all over the place and they canceled it so it went nowhere
