Man, you can tell the love and respect there. Nice contrast from the normal cutthroat nature of these moves.

He knows this is the death knell for them. Campbell was a goober that liked the rural life in Ames. He is their savior and the only coach who has been able to be consistently competitive there.
He is leaving because he knows they can’t compete, they’re already forecasting massive budget shortfalls, and he has dick for NIL. Small state like Iowa can’t realistically support multiple major programs in this climate. Iowa is lapping them with resource availability.

It's a goddamned travesty. The current state of college football will kill programs like this. A place where 2 and 3 star kids could get scholarships or walk on and be part of something.

Why wouldn't they be able to do that now? Nobody's paying the big bucks for those guys so they still fall through the cracks.

I think he’s implying that all of these guys who flew under the radar and had real talent will get discovered quickly and transfer to another program the next semester.
And eventually that coach will get irritated and leave for a different job, too.

But that's no longer wanting to be at a place for minor recruits to grow, which isn't the same as them being denied that opportunity because the landscape changed. Also, Rocco Becht was supposed to be good and they got him to stay...so far.

He's leaving b/c PSU was so desperate they had to give him an 8 year deal.

At the same time, I can see why Matt Campbell stayed as long as he did with an athletic director like that.
A lot of coach/AD relationships seem to be defined by power struggles, egos, and conflict. The mutual trust and respect shown by this AD is refreshing.

Not to be insulting but that's kinda because it's lower stakes at Iowa State. It's easier to go along and get along when 8 win seasons are great and 5 win seasons are "we'll get 'em next year".

He made $5MM at Iowa state and can stay there as long as he wants. It’s not that much more money after taxes and a hell of a lot more risk to get fired.
Penn state just fired a guy coming off arguably their best run since joining the big ten and he was handed a pedophile cover up from which to rebuild.

It's ultimately all ego, and a competent AD can calm things down if they know how to talk to narcissistic boosters. Look at how quickly Kansas got spoiled by Leipold and actually rumbles about firing him.

From what I read, Campbell refused to interview for the job until Iowa's season was officially over. I feel like if they were in the playoff hunt, he just wouldn't have interviewed at all.
That's an honorable man right there. I really wanted to point and laugh at Penn State, but they somehow landed on their feet.

Great speech in that moment

Schools like Iowa state will have choices to make around the other sports. If PSU has dedicated $25 million for NIL on top of the $21 million payroll, how many other schools can compete with thst?
Who suffers will be the other sports who will be moved to club status. The traditional powers were never going to stand on equal footing. They’ve skirted the $21 by providing NIL that others can’t afford. NIL is supposed to go through a clearinghouse, but that will be a joke too.

Apparently Penn State tried to contact him 6 weeks ago. Problem was he had changed agents and they contacted Campbell’s old agent. That agent never told Campbell, and didn’t tell Penn State he wasn’t representing Campbell anymore.

Yeah. I don’t believe that.

Being reported by one of the two main podcasters that work with Penn State.

Because pretty soon there won't be anything below the cracks..
They've set this thing up to be a 30-team semi-pro sports league, and smaller schools will eventually just say to hell with it and dump sports. Obviously Iowa State is in a much better situation than someone like ULM, but the "not quite there" teams in college sports are only going to get closer to the "no chance in hell" teams
