Is Baker to Tulane the right decision for him?

I love the guy. He's been great here and I hope we get to welcome him back as a HC down the road.
But is it not fair to think that these days it's better to gain all that experience as a coordinator at a big time program, playing with and against the best players at a very high level and then wait for a similar job when it comes available?
Rather than gain HC experience at a smaller program where you're dealing with lesser talent to compete with, lesser talent to learn how to scheme against, less stakes on the line, and less spotlight (something coaches struggle with when they try and make the jump to P4).
You look at guy's like Kirby, Lanning etc. that went straight from DC to premier P4 job. Is it possible that just staying around the highest level of the college game is better for your coaching development than taking a smaller job but having the HC responsibilities?
EDIT: To clarify, I don't mean can you get hired by a big school after taking a G5 job, but is it better for your career development as a coach.

Considering the last Tulane coach just went to Florida, I don’t think it’s a bad decision

Paying him 4mil a year to coach his alma mater, at a school the previous 2 HCs turned into good jobs? Yeah it’s the right call
Could he wait and get a better job? Maybe. But this hiring cycle, the P4 jobs mostly went to guys with HC experience

Fritz and Sumrall are both at P4 schools, so yes it’s the right decision

it definitely better to be a hav somewhere.
Look at this cycle
Auburn - G5 HC
Florida - G5 HC
LSU - P5 HC
Kentucky - P5 OC
Ole Miss P5 DC
VTech P5 HC
I dont know if coordinators
make worse hires but it’s hard to get
hired with no HC resume

There is no guarantee that the ULL HC job comes open next year.
I think he knew he had to settle again for Tulane just like when he was recruited.

Like everyone said, yes it's a good move. Look, everyone says LSU is the best job in the country because they don't have any other P4 school to compete with in state, and Louisiana (especially New Orleans) spits out 4-5 Star recruits like crazy... One day, someone is going to realize the right staff and facilities at Tulane can create a big P4 program using those recruits. 9-10 win seasons will eventually get them into Big 12 or the ACC. Continued success will bring in more money and donors. Facilities will be the hardest part where they are located at, but if I am a young DC looking for a HC spot, Tulane and the future it COULD hold would be enticing.

It's unfortunate because next year he's going to have one of the best offensive minds on the other side of the ball in the game to work with and you can't tell me he won't be able to learn a lot. Drastically up his game.
Also it's been proven over and over again that a very good coordinator doesn't necessarily make a good coach but then I guess he has to learn somewhere and it is his alma mater after all.

If he wants to be a head coach sooner rather than later what would you expect him to do?
Tulane is set up to continue to win. If BB can’t win 8-10 games a year at Tulane then he isn’t cut out to be a head coach.
BB might feel the need to jump into a head coaching job at a place like Tulane before stepping up. The last two Tulane coaches both got Power conference head coaching jobs.
If he doesn’t work out as a HC at Tulane he can return to being a DC.

People forget that Tulane finished as a Top Ten team as recently as 2022.
Blake has a big challenge to keep stacking the wins like they have over the past 4 years.

Yes, it is. Maybe if we played them, we could do something about it by giving them a loss. But we don’t do that.

Did you just miss this off-season?
Sumrall/Morris v. The #1 coordinator in Hartline?

That's possible but Tulane gotta get some longevity with a coach. They can't keep having to hire a new coach every few years, eventually that will bite them in the a**. So hopefully Baker stays there for that to happen. I hate to see him go but I wish him the best.

Wondering in this era and all coaches have to juggle, the schools are wanting to see guys prove they can run a program first before seriously considering them
I don’t know that any got serious looks

Unlikely
Tulane has found the sweet spot of spending just enough to get a quality coach, give him decent NIL for their size, let him move on. Rinse and repeat
A heavier investment likely wouldn’t yield much past that

Well, if I was him (of course I am looking through purple and gold glasses), my AD just hired a hot coaching commodity in college football. I am gonna learn from him and grow. My Alma mater will come open again someday. I would be staying, but he is not me and has free will to do as he pleases.

The Tulane similarities are one thing, but, but, both of those guys had really excellent head coaching resumes. Fritz laid the foundation and Sumrall road the wave.

i have a friend who is a AAD at a P4 school and he has been telling me with all the portal and NIL balancing you aren’t going to see many big programs hire an OC. they just aren’t as involved in that stuff at most schools and experience is crucial
