Penn State shows why LSU had to act when they did.

Everyone complains about LSU poaching Kiffin before the playoff, but had they waited they would be in Penn State's position right now. Even if a backroom deal was in place for Lane, LSU would be getting roasted as being inept because it couldn't be divulged that we had hired him.

Like Saban's "I'm not going to be the coach at Alabama" quote, the process requires deception, betrayal, and heartache. And the players pay the cost.

Doesn't have to be this way, but the NCAA is too stupid to fix it.

True. Many on here complained about how this hire was handled.

Verge handled this very well. Much better than Fla and PSU.

We honestly don’t even have to look at Penn state. WE were in that position not that long ago. People’s memories are so short or they choose to ignore it for the opportunity to be unhappy.

In our defense, this is one of those incredibly rare moments where our fanbase is, more or less, universally happy and understanding of the situation.

I'm wondering if they have their guy who happens to be coaching this weekend.

If they had their guy they wouldn’t be getting turned down by BYU’s coach, and Brohm, Heupel, etc.

And don’t I love to see it. For once I don’t have to rationalize being happy about the hire.

Notice how quiet the media was about Sitake having serious talks with PSU while 11-1 BYU was about to be in the playoffs? They also didn't seem to have a problem with Kiffin when they thought he was going to Florida.

PSU fired Franklin after making it to the CFP semifinal last year. No surprise most good coaches are turning them down.

It was a bad situation no matter how it was played out. There was going to be backlash and LSU/Lane were going to get thrown under the bus. It's not like we were purposely pissing on OM's season (we were ok with Lane coaching through the playoffs), but it turned into a dumpster fire.

I suspect many, in the media or otherwise, still cannot wrap their minds around the idea of LSU being a destination job. An institution of "dirty, poor ol' Louisiana" surely cannot have such an appeal.

Why were Les Miles and Ed Orgeron "perfect fits" for LSU? They were eccentric and dim-witted, just like everyone else affiliated with the school/state, naturally.

As such, it seems particularly incredulous for Lane to leave for what they perceive as a lateral move.

No; that's a fun talking point to get people riled up, but Saban (and Miles) disproved that a long time ago.

I think the real issue is this- LSU, when it's firing on all cylinders, is a legit threat to win it all. Good enough to beat anyone, Ohio State included.
And what's more scary to the Big 10 (and a lot of the US outside of the South) is this- Georgia is also that good when they're rolling, as they currently seem to be.
And LSU and Georgia don't affect each other at all.

Florida can be great, but they have to deal with Miami and Florida State within. Auburn can, but needs to cut into both UGA and Bama. Bama is more of a national thing at this point.
But LSU and Georgia can both coexist at the highest level, and other than one beating the other head-to-head, they don't knock the other's talent pool down.
I'd even say that I don't think Texas and A&M don't effect LSU, either.

What this means, is if LSU can get back up, you could have the SEC with 2 superpowers (LSU and Georgia), and maybe even a 3rd, that could stomp anyone else in the country. Remember the outcry with 2011, where it was LSU & Alabama, and then the rest of CFB? We could return to that. The outside world doesn't want that. With "just" Georgia, you know you can have an off year, and a single game. With 2 superpowers, you don't get past that, and you likely get those two meeting at the end.
