College football should make winning your conference a requirement for national champion

The size of the tournament will be fought about until there are 64 teams in it and the regular season is shortened and doesn't even matter. Make winning your conference a requirement for winning a national championship. That makes the entire regular season something to play for.
All 9 Conferences get 1 team (Pac 12 and Independent don't get in-go find a real conference to play in). That means the "tournament" starts with 18 teams.
Take the two smallest G5 conference champions and make them play against each other to make it to the "elite 8".
From there P4 champions vs G5 champions play at the P4 schools.
For the final 4 you can play at the bowl locations (Rose Bowl, Cotton, Sugar, etc.) or high seed home field.
This also allows teams to play better opponents outside of the conference throughout the season for better games.

Interconference playoffs could be a blast

That doesn't make sense. 7-5 Duke is playing for the ACC title. If they pull off the upset and win the ACC title, why do they automatically deserve a home playoff game instead of a 12-1 G5 champ?

You thought LSU complained about Alabama getting all of the calls in the past?
The SEC getting multiple teams in the dance has been so good for officiating the last few years.

Maybe im overlooking something
How does 9 conference winners equal 18 teams??

So only one contender from conferences like the SEC? No.

9 conferences. 2 teams per conference in their championship game.

There isn’t a chance in hell Duke is going to be allowed to win that game. It would cost the conference dearly. And that league is already on the brink.

Good for them. LSU won the SEC in 2001 with 3 SEC losses.
Would make for a heck of a game if Duke upsets Virginia.
If conferences want more that 2 teams in the playoffs then make your conference championship a tournament to get into it.

I think if conference championship games are eliminated, this is what may "replace" them.
The top 4 teams in the SEC, for example, would play a conference semifinal and championship game. Then the winner goes to a playoff. It would restore the value of winning your conference, while also greatly reducing the human element we have now.

But you said only teams that win their conference can win the natty. 9 of those teams wouldnt have won their conference

Especially if the SEC went to pods. Winner of those groups play each other for the right to the CFP

Yea you have to win your championship game to continue onto the natty.
18 teams would have that opportunity at the end of the regular season.

The Pac is going to be a full conference again next season.
The members will be Oregon State, Washington State, Boise State, San Diego State, Fresno State, Colorado State, Utah State, and Texas State.

LSU brethren would just be happy if you had to win your DIVISION...
Adopt rule, vacate Bama's truly MNC.

Yep. This would mean they have to reshuffle the schedule again, since your 3 permanent opponents would now have to be the ones in your same pod.

All this math the OP is doing ain't mathing.

Bad take. Why would a superior conference like the SEC (7 ranked teams, 5 in the top 10) agree to be put on equal terms with the AAC (2 ranked teams, none in the top 20)?

The problem is that conferences have gotten too large for a cfb season to adequately determine who are the best two teams in some cases. For example, look at the SEC: Texas A&M is 11-1 without having had to play Ole Miss, Georgia, or Alabama. Is A&M better than those 3 teams? Who knows!?
In a 12 team league, this straight up doesn't happen. A&M would have played at least 2 of those 3 in the regular season and would end up matched up against the 3rd in a championship game.
These 16 team mega conferences are simply too unweildly to produce clear cut conference championship games.
I believe we need to get back to 10 or ideally 12 team regional conferences. The scheduling of 8 conference games in a 12 team conference is the most fair system, imo, as it produces the fewest weird tie scenarios.
I would go 10 conferences, 12 teams each, everyone has to join a conference or get demoted down to FCS. Seed the playoff from the conference champs plus 2 at larges.
OR, play the bowl games based on traditional tie-ins, THEN seed the playoff from bowl winners.
