My koi’s got eaten and I need protection

Blue heron ate 3 of my 10 inch plus koi’s. I’ve bought a net in meantime but it went to a gap and caught another one.
I bought automated sprinklers but it will go below freezing soon so want to understand risks.

Put a heron decoy in the pond. They’re territorial critters.

My dad dug a catfish pond in the back of our pasture when I was probably in middle school. I saw a blue heron down by the pond and was watching it with binoculars; my dad said "REB, don't kill that bird, we like to watch it."
I watched it eat a catfish, and told him. He then said "REB go kill that bird."

Have a decoy, the bird noticed it was fake

Guess you will have heron in the turkey gumbo the day after thanksgiving.!

Too bad it wasn’t a sandhill crane. They are rather tasty. Aka ribeye of the sky.

Few updates:
1. Decoy didn’t work, heron came by looked at it then ignored it.
2. Automatically sprinkler didn’t work since it just makes the faucet leak.
3. Net did work for a bit but debris piling up. I may look to get this done professionally

Keep us updated. My girlfriend's koi keep disappearing, but we can't figure out the culprit. There were 14 prior to Thanksgiving. There are 4 left. Was thinking either bird or raccoons. Noticed some potted plants tipped over a couple mornings, which makes me suspect raccoon.

Raccoons, foxes, owls, otters, opossums, cats

Have you tried bird reflectors? They come all different shapes and sizes.

What is the theory of this? It shines light so birds don’t like it?

Same here. Go outside, and one is sitting on the edge looking at the fish.
I built a net structure around my ornamental pond and every other garden on my property. It's hard enough to grow stuff without predators screwing it all up.

There's really not a solution outside of scaring them off. They are a natural predator local to your area. Its just going to happen

I like your dad. Seems like a good man. :)
