WWTOTD? Rodents in the AirBnB

Long story short, we rented a cabin in North Carolina and in the middle of the night our 12 year old said she saw and heard mice or rats. Then we saw one of the nasty little frickers run through our room into the bathroom then into a closet. Is leaving and going somewhere else, asking for a refund for the rest of the trip an a-hole move? The place gets good reviews and we aren’t ones to leave bad reviews so I wouldn’t do that regardless. Need advice from the savants of the OT…

You are what’s wrong with society today and the root cause of the collapse of the social contract.
People need to call mother frickers out!
And you’re asking if it’s an a-hole move to asking for a refund because it’s a rat infested house? Huge pussy and doormat.

If I'm paying $$$ for an airbnb, it's because I'm assuming it's not infested with rats.

This would be a no go for my wife. She would've already had a new place to stay & working on a refund.

Is it rieke retreat?
Depends on the cabin.
Offgrid 100 miles from everything, I'm more forgiving

No. That’s what I’d do.

How do you call out the innocent people who rented a rat house?
Maybe you should save that vitriol for those who commit the acts instead.

If the rental was in the mountains of western NC, there's not really much you can do about one or two mice. It's like having a fly in the kitchen at some point. If it was overrun with mice, then yeah, there's a problem that should be identified and dealt with, but a mouse (or maybe two) isn't an infestation.
Any time my wife and I head to NC or TN to spend some time at a mountain cabin my wife takes her five-gallon bucket mouse trap and sets it in the kitchen. It's a trap door lid that sits on a five-gallon bucket. The mice climb up to the top for some crumbs she leaves on it and they fall into the bucket and can't get out. Then wifey takes the bucket outside in the morning and lets the mice free, the mice wander around for a bit then sneak back inside and we go through the entire thing all over again the following night.
We find that if we stay more than a weekend we get to know the mice by name.
In all seriousness, though, there's not much you can do about one or two mice getting into the kitchen late at night in a very rural setting. At least they're not disease-carrying rats that you'll get in urban settings.

They both need to be called out.

Absolutely not. I own an old house that we use as a camp on the river. We have it on AirBnB and it's been rented out dozens of times. On one occasion someone rented last minute and I was offshore, they were on their way to the place when they rented it, and I had no way to check the status of it. When they got there, lady bugs had taken over. The renter was obviously dismayed. I immediately sent their money back via Venmo, and helped them find another place ASAP.
The "Landlord" agrees to provide the house that's in the photos, and is morally obligated to providing you with a rodent free dwelling. You aren't wrong for bailing, or wanting your money back.

No way you can guarantee that a mouse or two won't enter the premises.

Let the hosts know. They will probably give you a nice discount

We did and they offered to refund the trip but the kids want to stay so we are and they’re sending terminix out asap. The hosts were mortified and very apologetic. It is a very rural cabin so in the grand scheme of things, it’s understandable a mouse would be able to find its way in

See? Was that so hard? Communication!

I mean…. You’re in a cabin in, I assume, the middle of the woods.
What did you expect to find?

A singular rat in a cabin in the woods wouldn’t make me want to leave. If it continued to happen I’d feel differently but I’d imagine that’s fairly normal. And good on the owners for taking swift action.

This. It would be like guaranteeing no cockroaches in the gulf south. It would be impossible. I’ve sprayed my house monthly, put out granular around my house landscaping, and still get the occasional roach.
My father in law had a very nice ski in and ski out townhome (subtle brag I guess Mingo) in Jackson hole and it had occasional mice. The locals are VERY anti poison due to birds of prey eating them and dying.
When I stayed at The Swag in North Carolina we had some ants in our room and some sort of flying bug.
Now an ‘infestation’ is different. But the occasional visitor is normal in many places.

I wouldn't stay there.

Video the problem and communicate with the owners. I would expect a huge discount. But give them a fair opportunity to correct the problem.
But if they do not credibly correct this, then not posting an honest and negative review is a method of victimizing other people in the future.
