Would you rather that pick back or Queen

Basketball writers have been hammering the front office for that trade for months…looks like it may have been the right move. I would rather Queen more than anyone of those top picks.

It’s way too early to say. But I enjoy watching Queen.

I genuinely think picks are valued too highly. The chances of getting talent (high or franchise changing) is so slim… everything has to fall into place.
We currently have the most guaranteed hyped number 1 pick you could ask for… and he’s a mess.
DQ looks outstanding and if we picked him top 3 next year and he was like this, we’d all be happy

I don't know enough about the prospects.
As one of the biggest trade haters on the board, I'd say at this point, I'd rather Queen.
But it's not a fair question, because you could have had both.

Please explain how..
Why would take that trade if it was a protected pick? Are you adding additional selections?

Depends if our pick pick hits the lotto and the pacers pick lands right outside the top 5.
Kinda how the Celtics rebuilt their team in one draft with Tatum and Brown.
Two top 6-7 picks is a lot to give up for one player.

Are the Hawks turning that trade down if the pick is Top 3 protected? Top 5?

Yes, 100%
Let's pretend I'm the Hawks GM. Sell me on the trade..

Joe Dumars is a basketball savant and I owe him an apology. We’d didn’t trade enough for Queen.
That said . . . we are about 5 athletic shooters away from being a team with a pulse and how you get those at this point seems impossible

Picks are always great until they become players. You can have Luka Doncic or you can get a guy like Andrew Wiggins, who was thought to be generational. Or a Deandre Ayton who people thought was the next Hakeem O.

I know the leaked story, but I still don't believe he was that dumb to not ask for protections first.
Why is it that it was "such a bad deal for us" yet it was Atlanta who took it? Why not any of the other 4 teams? Why aren't they stupid to not take it?

1) take queen at 9, draft a PG next year
2) protect the pick top 4
3) trade them Zion instead of the pick and take back salary for a player who gives a shite
4) don’t trade the pacers back their pick, trade the pacers pick to ATL instead of ours, knowing haliburton is out for the season, and add a future protected pick
all hypothetical of course, but there were ways and it is incumbent upon Dumars to maximize his assets especially in this market with Zion being a giant question mark, and that includes swallowing sunk cost before you take a gamble like that.
hey we might fall arse backwards into a true difference maker (jokic was a 2nd rounder recall) but cost of acquisition matters and it won’t ever not matter regardless of the result

I like Fears and glad we have him.
We picked 7th, are you saying trade down to 9th and pick up another pick? Either way, we don't have both Fears and Queen..

2) protect the pick top 4
The Hawks do not take the trade then. If we protect it top 4 or 5, then the pick is not for 2026 more than likely. So you think we can trade up from the 20s into the lottery for a 2027 or 2028 pick? Why would the Hawks do that?

They weren't trading Zion at that time and he didn't have that much value. If Dumars would have traded Zion for the pick, plus salary, that trade gets lambasted too and it's Queen vs Zion for the next few years.
quote:

Are they psychic now? You knew Haliburton was getting hurt in the finals or they would conduct a rebuild while he's out? Nobody knew that and nobody thought it was a bad deal at the time. It's bad luck, but that's not something people could possibly know.

That's a cop out and pure revisionist history. You are basically saying he shouldn't have done anything. That's convenient. He made mistakes, but he's done good things as well.

So if he fails, he's just dumb. If he succeeds, it's all luck. So no matter what he sucks. That seems like solid logic. I appreciate your contributions..

would you rather have queen and the number one pick next year or queen and fears? Or any combination of one of those players plus a top 4 pick?
and all of the trades including with the pacers could have been done on draft day. There was absolutely no reason to trade with the pacers prior to that. I’m happy queen is good, but just because one outcome is good doesn’t mean a better outcome isn’t preferable

Yes taking Queen after trading away an unprotected lottery pick is risky but come on let's be honest draft picks are not locks/can't misses! Look no further than Zion for an example! Today the Derik Queen selection looks like a steal if he continues to develop and stays healthy they got a franchise player you can build around. Throw fears in the mix, who is great with the handle and can get to the cup & create his own shot he just needs to work on his 3pt shooting. If they continue to build this roster around those 2 this team could be something in 3-5yrs!
