There doesn't appear to be a path for Ole Miss to fire Kiffin "for cause" before the College Football Playoff. Per the On3 report, Kiffin has played by the book the terms of his contract by giving Carter prior notice that he was in talks with other programs for a coaching job.

The Rebels are fighting for an opportunity to move up the CFP and earn a bye in the first round by defeating Mississippi State, and potentially the SEC championship. It's unclear if the selection committee would knock Ole Miss down in seeding if Kiffin took a job elsewhere for 2026.

I think that was pretty obvious when he sent his family to Gainesville and Baton Rouge

he very well may stay, but nothing about that sentence screams he's dying to stay at OM.

Looks like he's related to Lonn Phillips.

Not sure why him coaching in 2026 would have any bearing on their rankings for this year. OM not allowing him to coach through the playoffs could have an impact but I don't think any dramatic drop would occur solely off of this.

Ole Miss tried to call his bluff and it may have fricked them in the arse because he was actually willing to leave. That’s what I think happened. Now they’re trying to get the money together. But is it too late?

Kiffin and Low (his buddy) put this out there to remind everyone "we didn't breach the contract because he disclosed it to OM first".... Lane trying to control the narrative once again.

Why would they consider firing him for cause? They could simply reassign him unltil he takes the new job with the samne result and no lawyers.

It shouldn't. But we've seen committees be swayed in the past by key personnel loses by teams ahead of playoff selections. Most notably, Florida St in 2023. They were undefeated conference champions. Yet, they got bumped out of the CFP in favor of 1 loss Texas AND Alabama. The committee threw out a bunch of BS to justify it. But the reality is they felt FSU wasn't as good of a team without their starting QB. While correct, that shouldn't have been a reason to subjectively exclude them from the CFP. They passed every test on their schedule.

Who's to say the committee wouldn't look the same way at a team with an interim coach?

This gives you an indication how far the reporting is lagging the actual progress.
