President Donald Trump has a message for his MAGA base on immigration. And he knows they don’t want to hear it.

The president on Wednesday again offered a defense of visas for high-skilled workers, arguing that Americans don’t have the knowhow to fill certain jobs. He pointed to the multi-billion dollar expansion of chip production in Arizona, saying the company — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company — will bring in thousands of workers, and that he will “welcome those people.”

“I love my conservative friends. I love MAGA,” Trump said during remarks at the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum at The Kennedy Center. “But this is MAGA, and those people are going to teach our people how to make computer chips, and in a short period of time, our people are going to be doing great.”

The remarks represent Trump’s most pointed defense of his immigration positions to date, and show the president is aware he has work to do to bring along the hawks in his party.

Nearly one year since his return to the White House, Trump’s insistence that legal immigration is not only tolerable but an economic necessity continues to roil hardliners on the right, who are at odds with the business and tech interests that Trump has long aligned himself with.

“The people who are against us are really, really smart,” Trump said. “They’re unbelievable patriots, but they just don’t understand — our people have to be taught.”

He added that companies that invest big money to create plants here need to “bring a lot of their people from their country to get that plant open, operating and working. I’m sorry. So my poll numbers just went down, but with smart people, they’ve gone way up.”

I’m trying to remember, while President Trump certainly campaigned on cracking down on illegal immigration, and he’s doing his damnest to deliver on that promise, did he ever campaign on or make statements about greatly reducing or eliminating legal work visas? Or is that something the base assumed would happen taking inferences from others statements he made on the campaign trail?

I remember a lot of people thought he was going to completely scrap the carbon credit stuff, yet to this date, he hasn’t touched that issue. Nor did he ever promise on the campaign trail to address it. Folks, especially much of the MAGA base, just assumed he would.

part of legal migration is providing a benefit to the USA and being able to support ones self without government support. It has been policy for a very very very long time.

This is waaaay different than illegal immigration.

Their making a false equivalency and baiting MAGA to buy it.

It is our press after all.

This is seriously the dumbest argument. Just unreal how anyone reads this with any understanding of why people are critical of H1B and thinks this is responsive in any way.

Then make the fee $500,000. That should be a small price to pay for someone who trains ten people to do what they do.

I believe this is their messaging.

It's intentionally deceptive about the H1B issue, aimed at ignorant MAGA NPCs and boomer types who are ignorant as to the actual discussion being had.

There’s no difference between legal and illegal immigration because there’s a term set on how long they can stay and when the term is up they disappear into a sea of other Indians and live here illegally and our system is too overwhelmed to find them unless they commit a crime and even then they don’t get deported

He's not wrong in this regard. Bush's "No child left behind" crap did nothing but hinder those students who excelled by yoking them to the slowest and most stubborn mules in the class. The federal government has ruined the overall education system of the states with the promise of candy (funding) for certain favors (mandates to receive that funding).

It does no one any good to give a failing child a passing grade in order to boost his self esteem. Identify areas of weakness in a student's comprehension or abilities and address the issue head on to ensure that child/student has a chance of succeeding in his adult life.

Until we fix our education system and demand quality performance we will continue to find ourselves in need of imported skilled workers. Equity and inclusion is only going to provide people who are content to sit around smoking a doob' and being content to giggle at mundane crap while living in poverty and squalor.

I don’t know. If you read this board, there seems to be a sentiment from quite a few in the MAGA arena who want HB1s done away with, at least temporarily.

Personally, I do believe there’s definitely a role for HB1s and other skilled visas to play in our country. Like you said, the ones who can provide a true benefit to the United States and not need taxpayer assistance.

Yeah, I know what Bessent said a couple of weeks ago (and Trump to Laura Ingraham), but I would have thought they'd pivot by now.

Because of the influx of Indians taking service and tech jobs

Trump is not discussing service/tech jobs. He's discussing things like high end manufacturing, shipbuilding, and microchip manufacturing.

India does not have an advanced manufacturing sector, a major shipbuilding industry, or microchip manufacturing industry. Why would we continue to focus H1Bs on India, given this?

Now South Koreans, Japanese, Chinese, and Taiwanese people? Sure. That isn't the pervasive issue, however.

They know as long as NPCs carry water for the irrationalities and dishonesty of Trump/MAGA, they won't need to.
