Do you prefer a big name that costs lots of $$$ or risk bringing in a young guy?

With the fiasco going on with CBK and the $54M buyout, I'm all for going with a young, up and coming coach that has a record of success at a smaller school and won't cost us an arm and a leg.
I know the hot name is Kiffin, but in 7 seasons as an SEC HC he has yet to win an SEC championship or even play in a championship game. IMO, making Kiffin one of the top 3 paid coaches is absolutely ludicrous! If you look at his overall coaching career, it's not that impressive.
College Record
Tennessee 7-6 (1 season)
USC 28-15 (4 seasons)
Florida Atlantic 27-13 (3 seasons)
Ole Miss 54-19 (6 seasons)
68% winning average is not going to cut it at LSU!
In the NFL, he was 5-15 with the Raiders.
I know some will say OM is a tough place to win at, but let's get real, it's not ULM! OM has a lot of money and resources, but maybe not on the scale of Texas or Texas A&M, but that's most of the conference.
I say let's go grab a young coach like Sumrall, Brent Key, Clark Lea, Joey McGuire or Jeff Brohm.
We just gave two older coaches - O and CBK - a chance and that didn't work out so well (yes, I know O won a NC but he was complete embarrassment after that). I'm ready to get a young and hungry coach that's ready to make their mark and won't demand a huge contract, but can earn it by winning.

I'm not convinced that the big names being mentioned will win a championship here.

I'd prefer the young guy.
No hire is a guarantee. So if you get the younger guy wrong, you can affordably move on.
Mess up with the big $$$ guy, and now we're 100's of millions of dollars in the hole from our last 3 coaches.
If it's Kiffin, I have my reservations, but can't deny his offensive mind for the game.

LSU is in the SEC, which means that only a proven head coach who won at the Power 5 level should be hired...no risks are worth taking on unproven coordinators or even winning coaches from non-Power 5 schools.

Younger guy, spend the money on NIL

This. Bring in a young, hungry guy.

It depends on the coach. The also don’t care what he did earlier in his career at Tennessee or USC. I care more about what he has done lately.

We did the big name, established coach last go round. The more I think about it, id be good with giving a youngster a shot even a coordinator as long as its an LSU friendly deal. Don't want to get caught up long term with a massive deal and buyout again unless its a can't miss prospect.

If it was thought that Kiffin was that good I wouldn't be opposed to it. I don't think he is.
IMO, it's not a "big name" vs "young guy," but just do our homework and offer the best candidate. IDK who that is but not convinced it's Kiffin.

If LSU can afford it, bring in Kiffin AND stack up the NIL pool.

I'm incapable of making the decision. I thought BK was a safe hire, given his experience and track record, even though BK diehards told me he was a prick that players, coaches, and fans resented. The layers of a coach are hard to peel off, and it's hard to predict how they'll actually do at such a pressure cooker as LSU. I just hope the very best for the program. The state/region is loaded with talent, the LSU brand speaks for itself, and we'll seemingly have NIL to compete on that front. But, BK is a perfect example that even all of those things don't ensure consistent success, especially in the SEC.

Your thread title suggests a Big Name is not a risk. Ask UT with Tom Herman...big name. A&M with Jimbo...big name. LSU with Kelly...the biggest of the names.
And Special Ed won us a Natty. No one had ever heard of Eli Drinkwitz and he's winning at Missouri.

I’d prefer young and hungry who is willing to take less and pour more into NIL to give him a shot. Needs to be able to lock down one side of the ball though. Preferably an offensive mind with successful track record calling plays as a coordinator in the past. Give him a decent pay with incentives

Honestly , I think Kiffin is at his best an OC . If he wants to be a HC , he should stay at Ole Miss .

Worked out ok for Georgia hiring a coordinator
