Todd Snider, the freewheeling American artist known for his sharp wit and decades of genre-blending songwriting, has died.

He was 59.

His record label confirmed the news Saturday, announcing the singer-songwriter died Friday in a message shared on his social media accounts.

"Where do we find the words for the one who always had the right words, who knew how to distill everything down to its essence with words and song while delivering the most devastating, hilarious, and impactful turn of phrases?" the statement said.

He had an up and down life. Lots of addiction and recovery cycles. Chaos and calm.

He was one of my favorite artists to see live and his albums were a part of my playlists for going on 30 years.

Sad that mad man is gone.

All in all, he was an alright guy.

Cheers to an "alright guy". He was one of a kind. A true trubador.

It's a weird situation. He got jumped in Utah after a show. Went to the hospital, discharged for being combative or something, went back, got arrested for disorderly.

He went back home to Hendersonville, TN after the tour was canceled and died in the hospital there after being diagnosed with pneumonia.

A lot of articles are mentioning the incident without really explaining that it happened weeks before, so people are confused.

quote:

Hello friends, family, and members of the Shithouse Choir.

We have some difficult news to share. After Todd returned home to recover last week, he began having trouble breathing and was admitted to the hospital in Hendersonville, TN. We learned from his doctors that he had been quietly suffering from an undiagnosed case of walking pneumonia.

Our beloved brother’s condition has become more complicated, and he's since been transferred for additional treatment. His care team and those closest to him are by his side and doing everything they can.

Right now we’re asking everyone who loves Todd to hold him in your thoughts in whatever way feels right to you. Say a prayer, light a candle, roll one up, send strength, or just keep him close in your heart. You've carried him through so much over the years, and he needs that from all of us now more than ever.

We’ll share more when there is more to tell. Thank you for surrounding him with so much love, support, and compassion.

??

Never heard of someone being discharged for being combative....

Hospitals would lose 10% of their pt's...

Sounds like his family should lawyer up....

I love Todd Snider. "Keep Off the Grass" is one of my all time favorites. Rip Todd.

quote:

It keeps on getting harder to keep on keeping on
With everybody screaming orders in my ear
I want to be my own man, I would love to walk alone
But every time I leave my home this is what I hear
Keep your nose clean, your head above water
Keep your feet on the ground, hands off my daughter
Keep your back to the wind, thoughts to yourself
An eye on the clock, an eye on your health
I wish they would let me keep to myself
I'll do fine on my own

Why? What is your legal reasoning? That you read it on a message board? He was combative because he didn’t want to stay and they can’t make him. He died because the pneumonia had progressed too far by the time he got to the hospital. That’s not a reason to “lawyer up”.

Then you haven’t stayed in the hospital. They have signs hung up prominently in every room warning that abuse towards hospital staff won’t be tolerated. They will absolutely discharge your arse if you violate the policy.

He could really play that song “ Louie Louie.”

At first it sounded a little jumbled in his jaw, but he practiced night and day.

I remember buying something at Paradise Records in the early 90’s and a promo cd of “Alright Guy” was thrown in the bag. I listened to it more than a few times for sure, and years later I saw Jerry Jeff at the Varsity and he covered it. I was like “hey! I remember that song from back in the day..”

Then I remember downloading a song called “Beer Run” he allegedly did on either Limewire or Kazaa and it had my foot tapping.

That’s the end of my Todd Snider exposure.

RIP, he was a tree-huggin', peace-lovin', pot-smokin', porn-watchin', barefootin', folk singin', lazy-arse hippy.

Pt’s can become combative for many different reasons. There’s a difference between combative and being abusive.

You can’t just D/C someone simply for being combative. Post op pts can become combative from anesthesia. People with dementia and Alzheimer’s often become combative. In this case he may have been combative from hypoxia.

It is possible this phrasing is masking a “left AMA” situation.

His song making fun of grunge is my favorite. It came out right at the peak of the Seattle grunge scene while he was a folk hippie in Athens GA.

Well the op said he was discharged for being combative.. Now leaving AMA is on the patient, but a hospital is still somewhat responsible for just letting someone leave AMA.
