Multiple restaurants in New York City have found a way around paying the minimum wage

They are hiring virtual cashiers from the Philippines via zoom calls and only have to pay them $3.25 per hour

The locations doing this still ask for 18% tips on orders

Sansan Chicken, Sansan Ramen, and Yaso Kitchen locations in Manhattan, Queens, and Jersey City still prompt customers for 18% tips.

No, no, no... the double standard stinks to high heaven.

They are doing at least two awful things...
1) Avoiding minimum wage laws,
2) off shoring jobs that New Yorkers would work.

The possible 3rd is the tip situation, but I haven't thought that one all the way through to argue.

I wonder what Mamdani will have to say about that.

Not that I care about Mamdani.

However... isn't there an expectation that jobs be filled with locals/citizens/inhabitants/residents (I've no idea on NYC nomenclature) BEFORE outsourcing?

I'm sure they must be utilizing some loophole- but damn.

How is this any different than ordering from a tablet/ screen with no humans involved?

This is what happens when the price of local labor is artificially skewed by the government

Because humans ARE involved.

Seriously, that's my only beef.

Want to fully automate the ordering process? Go for it.

This is just... wrong. I'm assuming they have a legal loophole... but it's interesting times for NYC.

They need to take it up with their local government. Don’t blame the owner, blame the politicians for forcing business owners to find alternative solutions to combat the taxes imposed on them

They're also outsourcing Hotel check-in now. Why not just fully automate it?
