I’m in need of some suggestions. I’m leaning towards the BBC Diary of Anne Frank miniseries from 2009.

I showed Grapes of Wrath for the unit on the Great Depression. And the kids stayed attentive for the most part.

I’ve got about a 2 1/2 window max.

Would Best Years of our Lives be an option? Or is that too subtle of a concept?

We watched War and Remembrance in my American history community College course I took while in high school

Loved that teacher. And that miniseries was so good too

The Best Years of Our Lives is a great movie. It shows how things were back home, when the soldiers returned.

If historical accuracy matters, here are a couple that fit.

Tora! Tora! Tora! (1970)
gives the Japenese side of the Pearl Harbor attack, and our immediate response. The run time is 2h 24m (144 min) per IMDb

The Longest Day (1962) IMDb is about the D-Day Invasion, and is somewhat accurate too, but it's 2hr 59 m long.

Midway (1976) IMDb is about the U.S. trying to figure out what Japan's next move would be, and how we could use our suddenly limited resources best to oppose them. It's 2h 12m.

I was kind of leaning towards Tora or Midway because of the time stamp stuff.

I remember watching The Big Red One in high school. It hit differently than the rest of those you mentioned. I'll always remember that little boy falling on Lee Marvin's shoulders. It brought home the horrors of war in a personal space that the others didn't deliver at that age. And Luke Skywalker was in it.

At LSU, we watched some episodes of Victory At Sea in a WW2 history class. You’ve gotten some good suggestions so far. Bridge On The River Kwai and Empire Of The Sun are interesting.

We watched Birth Of A Nation in a different History class. Yowza!

These were all made during the war. Might be interesting to show that perspective to this generation

Story of GI Joe

Pride of the Marines - marine is blinded by grenade. Shows the affects of war

Cry Havoc - army nurses

Homefront

The Sullivans

A Medal for Benny

As a 10 - 12 year old my favorites were The Longest Day and The Great Escape. I would think The Great Escape would be the best choice to keep their attention.

Downfall (2004) if you want to show them how it was in the last 10 days in the bunker.

Our English IV teacher was on the verge of letting us watch Shindler’s list in class and fast forwarding through the nudity scene, but our principal was a B and said no.
