People will melt if we hire a diamond in the rough, back then expectations were different

I think they tried that with BK. He was at ND. Saban was at Mich St.

Chasing anything close to Saban is insanity.

But I agree they need to have an actual search, no Eddie O type situation.

he was a former NFl DC who had built up a G5 and P5 program.

Toledo and Michigan State were in really good spots when he left.

He wasn’t really a diamond in the rough.

I have it on good authority that the binder is hidden deep in the football ops building.

Mark Emmert is the only reason LSU got Saban. Verge is no Emmert.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Mark Emmert told us he was going to get us a great coach. Then he announced this guy Nick Saban and was making him the highest paid coach at 1.2 Million. I bout shite my britches.

Yep. Dumbass Joe Dean tried to lowball him and Emmert would have none of it.

NS was very well respected in the coaching profession both college and pro.He was focused had a plan and was very consistent in how he coached as an assistant and HC. He wasn’t known down here very much but elsewhere was.Jon Sumrall has the same respect from his coaching peers.

I think Saban's people approached us. That's how he got on our radar.

Heck, we could've hired him five years earlier when MSU did. We hired DiNardo who never had a winning record at Vandy.

Joe was trying negotiate telling Emmert “ I think I can get this guy for a couple of hundred thousand dollars less”

Emmert, tired of Dean’s spendthrift ways told him “Pay the man what we wants and get him on campus.”

Thank you, Sammy. The "Saban was a diamond in the rough" narrative has always been a suspect and factually incorrect. There was already NFL HC talk prior to Saban taking the HC job at LSU. The people in the know, knew; casual fans - not so much.

Glen Mason turned LSU down, but he recommend an up and coming coach - Nick Saban.

I agree. Hiring the greatest coach of all time is what you need to do.

I just don't want a re-tread hire like James Franklin, Dan Mullen, Jimbo Fisher or Coach O. Find the guy who is hungry, who has mastry over either side of the ball and is consumed with winning. Not golf. A football version of Jay Johnson(like has been said many times on this board) Find that guy. He might not be the splashy hire and people might be upset at first, but Lanning wasn't a splashy hire. Neither was elko, but it seems it have worked well for Oregon and TAMU. Cignetti? I hadn't even heard of that cat before last year.
