In an effort to lift sales ahead of the holiday season, Target has issued a new directive mandating workers smile and make eye contact, as well as greet or wave, to any shopper that comes within 10 feet. The directive was first reported by Bloomberg News.

If a customer is within 4 feet, the worker should ask whether they need help, how their day is going or a similar pleasantry, the directed noted.

“Heading into the holiday, we’re making adjustments and implementing new ways to increase connection during the most important time of the year,” Chief Stores Officer Adrienne Costanzo said in a statement to Bloomberg News.

It won’t fix anything but at least the company is acknowledging that employees could be more customer service oriented.

Explaining to employees to be friendly to customers is a very interesting choice for customer relations

Why be cynical? This type attitude towards the customer is one thing that has helped places like Publix and Chik Fil A

Because Gen Z workers are about to post videos about smiling sarcastically all over their social media, and Target is getting out ahead of it.

Shrewd move on their part actually

This is just basic stuff for customer facing employees. Why wouldn’t a business do this?

Just think if this person worked at Target.

I might make an exception.

It could help if they use this to cull the herd and in their hiring practices.

Way too many people in customer service that clearly can't stand other humans and have no interest in faking it.

If a man walks into the ladies room with his pecker hanging out, just smile, he’s a girl at heart.

They generally treat their employees like shite from what I can tell, but it’s also retail hell, so you kind of know what you’re betting yourself into when you sign up…

Honestly, I’d settle for the store shelves not looking like a tornado just blew through…

Because just telling a young employee to be friendly is not specific enough.

I get mandating them to greet customers and ask if they need assistance but the forced smiling seems like it’s just going to be creepy. Just my 2 cents.

If I am in front of a customer as the owner or the lowest newly hired intern, I would do this as a matter of common fricking sense.

Two things can be true:

1. Most businesses could benefit from having more employees who make an effort to be nice.

2. Most retail businesses have a high percentage of a-hole customers who, if they interact with employees, are treating them like garbage. It's probably annoying to have some jackass boss telling you that you're ordered to "smile" constantly in that situation.

Maybe its me, but how can you honestly say hello to someone and ask if they need help WITHOUT smiling to some extent?

I think a better idea would be to stop letting men use women's restrooms and stop marketing trans garbage to children.

Also, bring back "boys" and "girls" toy aisles.

I couldn't care less if your employees smile at me.
