BATON ROUGE - Mayor-President Sid Edward proposed his 2026 budget during Wednesday's Special Metro Council meeting. In total, Edwards' plan would eliminate 420 government positions.

Edwards said that due to the incorporation of St. George, the city-parish's general fund will be reduced by $15 million.

During his address, Edwards said personnel is the largest cost from the general fund and his budget proposes a 33% workforce reduction, excluding police and fire employees.

The mayor said that his plan does not include his THRIVE initiative to let the government tap money currently going to the parish library system, the public pest control agency and the Council on Aging.

WBRZ

He's going to catch hell from those that view government as a jobs program, but this is what must be done.

I think he wants to merge fire and ems into one.

So include EMS in the cuts now, then merge. Protect his buddies at Fire.

If Baton Rouge had a mayor with any sense St George would still be Baton Rouge.

Instead of giving St George residents a vote in the mayor’s race, the city fought and sued St George. So to protect the easy elections for a few more years, they destroyed Baton Rouge’s golden goose.

Yup. Broome really messed up. But she’s not from here so she doesn’t care. Hope her life sucks.

Kind of feels he missed the biggest offenders in the city with this one.

To be fair, Kip fricked SG on the way out of the door too. He’s the one that annexed all the areas on Seigen to take away a potential commercial tax base for SG

FWIW, there has been discussion of downsizing BRPD to reduced focus on a specific core of city responsibilities and elevating an expanded EBRSO to handle the broader law enforcement role BRPD now provides. Not offering an opinion, just saying that has been suggested in some quarters.

90% of those are likely friends/family of the previous administration and absolute waste.

Oh well, it has to happen.

Also don’t think THRIVE will pass.

Yup. THRIVE pays for St George payoff.

BR city should raise taxes to pay for it since Broome spent all the money on the city of BR and their bloated government.

Why is this needed if the unincorporated areas weren’t subsidizing the city of BR???

Nobody says otherwise now. Even Broome’s attorney argued that in court.
