Everybody is freaking out that this is a referendum on Trump, MAGA, etc...

Get the f outta here. Who did we think was going to win??? Sliwa, the zero-chances republican? Or cuomo, the disgraced former governor that resigned in a massive scandal? A half-dead rabid muskrat stood a better chance of beating Mamdani.

Ergo this is not some validation of socialism. It is also not a rejection of MAGA or GOP. You had a guy roll into a city with zillions of Soros bucks behind him running against two dweebs that never had a chance, and promising every sucker in New York a bunch of free stuff. Surprise surprise.

Next media circus please, I'm not spendign any more time on this one.

Its a big deal because it shows left wing populism can win and can easily peel away disaffected and angry voters who voted for right wing populism without results

he will accomplish almost nothing of what he promised. The GOP is just using this as a scare tactic.

I think you're right on the overarching risk, nug

But I don't think Mamdani winning is a particularly useful warning bell on it.

The Virginia/NJ exits are much more alarming in that regard.

It’s a big deal because a leftist candidate didn’t bother wearing the “moderate” veil and he cruised to a win. If you don’t think pollsters and consultants are taking notice for 2026 and beyond, you’re kidding yourself.

It can win in NYC but not everywhere.

Nobody who's anybody who really knows about politics thinks the results from yesterday are no big deal.

NYC, New Jersey, Virginia and California combined indicates strong disaffection with MAGA wing of the Republican Party. And Trump’s shenanigans are not helpful.

I'd suggest that the jury is out over who that may be a positive for on a national scale.

The thing is, there has already been a socialist mayor of NYC in the Trump era: DeBlasio

DC and DC burbs, filled with angry liberals upset Trump was elected. That election was never going to turn out differently than the NYC Mayoral race either.

right wing populism
If the party doesn't pivot back to this platform (like they promised in campaign season) then they are toast.

What most Americans who aren't boomer age want is populism. Mamdani dresses his globalist socialism up as populism, and emotional people like women, teenage voters and other native born Americans fall for it. That man is everything but American populism and protectionism.

You've posted some threads lately that we're heavily downvoted and ignored and shouted down by the boomers of the board with their head in the sand, but MAGA is losing males young and old alike, especially the young ones. They're not moving left though, they're moving further to the right than the MAGA base, but they're quickly becoming more nihilistic and reserved to their fate after watching this administration pivot, backtrack and not follow through on more right wing populist positions promised to them. Talk is cheap.

You seem confused about what populism is, and how its tied to economic leftism.

NYC is one of the most expensive places to live in the world, and a candidate came in and promised a bunch of free shite. It's not a surprise he is popular with the average New Yorker.

New York is always going to vote for the liberal that promises them the most free shite.
