For Example, Grubb at Alabama. Hire him and you get the added benefit of knee capping a rival. Deboer looked pretty average without him last year and this year they are rolling. No idea if he wants to be a HBC, but there are plenty of great coaches out there that had no Head coaching experience before they got shots at their current schools. Those include Kirby, Day, and Lanning, all of who anyone on this board would be elated with. No guarantee an established HBC is going to produce either. Look at Kelly.

I think that’s probably the route they end up going because the HC’s they want aren’t moving

I’d like a coordinator that does more with less talent.

Grubb doesn’t fit that bill

Doesn’t have to be Grubb. Only point is I don’t think we should limit ourselves to established head coaches. Schools like UGA, tOSU, and Oregon haven’t. Not sure why LSU thinks they are tiers above those jobs because they’re not.

Because of Archer.

LSU has a championship formula: hire an experienced coach from a P4 conference that can recruit.

Saban, Michigan State
Miles, OSU
Coach O, OM

I see your point. Smart and Lanning had elite defensives at UGA year after year. UGA has a down defense this year.

Ryan Day was promoted within and just happens to be Ohio State’s coach. Youre not hiring Kelly or Patricia to be head coach.

Vandy is having a great year on offense, should we look into tim beck? A guy that spent 30 seasons at pittsburg state.

Maybe indiana’s offensive coordinator but he has only coached power 4 football for 2 seasons.

Want to take a risk in colin klien?
I just dont think the coordinator hire is out there this cycle

Klein is going to Okie State. I've heard that deal is already in place.

I agree with all of this. I think they will be making a mistake if they limit the search. Maybe they end of with a sitting HC but I think it is a mistake not to look at coordinators also.

You left out:
Curly -sucked from day one
Dinardo- brought backed the magic before sucking
Kelly- early success before retiring with Golden Parachute

So I guess that makes it a 50-50 gamble!

Grunb flopped at Seattle and the players walked all over him. Moderate pass.

Curly and Kelly were not P4 coaches.

Dinardo was, and immediately turned around the program. That was the right direction.

I like Will Stein at Oregon. OC with a top 5 offense for a defensive head coach. Salvaged Dante Moore's career.

Matt Patricia will get a HC job this year. I dunno about chip. Not sure he wants to but with nil that does help his lack of recruiting and if he had a good GM to aid in that he could be very successful

100% this. We can absolutely make a great hire still, but with Landry’s actions, it’s basically the only route we can now take. He’s narrowed the field quite a bit, with all established coaches dropping out for sure.

We can get a great young coach, but it takes someone with a great eye for talent to make this pick and is a much greater risk. I still think a power 4 or lower power 5 is still a safer move if we can get them.

This is true but there are tons of examples of college coaches flopping in the pro game. That doesn’t mean they aren’t great college coaches. See tGOAT, Saban. Or one of the other greats, Spurrier.

Curly was not.

Notre Dame is considered a P4 equivalent team.

That's in the old system

The CEO-recruiter model is dead in the current system

You're trying to argue the head coach of Notre Dame doesn't qualify for your scenario because they're not in a conference, pretending they're at a lower level?
