Is it illegal to plead guilty to a crime you didn’t commit?

If it looks like to do so may be the best option?

Isn’t that what a “No Contest” plea is for?

No contest is when you plea guilty but still maintain your innocence

I watch Law and Order... I think they call that an Alford Plea...

There's more to prison life than rampant, free loving butt sex. It's not a 24/7 orgy like they advertise.
I know you wanna get in there bad, but please rethink. The whole prison thing is a pain in the arse.

I forgot about that one. Is it treated the same as a guilty plea?

I took one semester of “Business Law” 20 years ago in College and my old lady always has on these Cold Case Mystery shows in the background.
So, I would double check what I said.

Dirty lawyers and prosecutors talk innocent folk into doing this all the time

It actually is since the statement is perjury and potentially obstruction. I imagine it is only ever prosecuted when someone is taking the blame for someone else intentionally.
There are no contest (nolo) pleas as well as Alford pleas. They are slightly different and without going into it the main substantive difference is an Alford can be used as evidence against someone in a subsequent civil case.

I don't know if the guilty plea itself is illegal, but if you lie in the course of allocution, that would be perjury. I imagine it could also meet the elements of obstruction of justice or making false statements to LEO or something like that.

So what did you do, Oyster?

At some point you would have to give a sworn statement; opening you up to perjury charges. However, if you're already voluntarily going to prison that's probably not much of a deterrent.

Yes, if you admit to a crime that you didn't commit in court, you are committing perjury and treason.

You would be perjuring yourself under oath, which is a felony.
“No contest” or “nolo contendre” where we are in LA, is neither an admission of guilt nor innocence. Generally, you are just acknowledging that there may be sufficient evidence to otherwise convict you or you don’t give a shite so you’ll take the charge.

If they know you didn't commit the crime, why are they putting you in a position to plead?
Posted on 10/31/25 at 5:27 pm to OysterPoBoy
It depends on whether or not you want to risk a jury trial.
Judges are lazy. Having to deal with a trial makes them pissy, and they won't hold back if a jury finds you guilty.

Doing this is tacitly encouraged by prosecutors all the time. Plea deals and such
