Can your family of 4 keep your grocery bill to 4200/yr?

Rep. Clay Higgins thinks you can. He posted the following:
Avg household size is 4. That’s $350 per month for groceries for a family of 4.
I am cheap AF when grocery shopping. I ship a lot of sales. Buy in bulk at Sam’s. Buy a lot if stuff at Aldi and Walmart. Just about everything is generic brand. Very little sweets.
Absolute minimum, I spend $800 per month.
Do we have people on SNAP who should not be? Yes.
Do we have people on SNAP who buy crap with it or trade it? Yes.
But Clay must be jealous of all the attention Huey P Landry is getting this week and felt the need to somehow sound dumber than Landry…

There are 22 million American households receiving SNAP benefits for groceries, at $4200 per year on average. Try to get your head wrapped around how many pantries you can stock with $4200 dollars in properly shopped groceries. Any American who has been receiving $4200 dollars per year of free groceries and does NOT have at least 1 month of groceries stocked should never again receive SNAP, because wow, stop smoking crack.

He's competing with Landry to see who can be the biggest retard politician out of Louisiana, which is a tough thing to do.

My family of 4 has spent $4200 in a month on food.

If I was poor enough to be on SNAP, then yes. Rice and beans my friend. Go listen to Dave Ramsey. Being poor should not be comfortable.

I bet a family could come close if they tried really hard. Stick to chicken for protein, vegetables, canned food is really cheap, etc. Go to Sam's and buy canned corn in bulk and it's like .75 cents per can. Kids get fed at school so that reduces cost.
Food assistance started as a provider of food staples. Not the bastardized buy crab legs we have now.

I'm not sure hes articulating his point very well. I'm not sure he's suggesting that 4200/yr is enough to cover all groceries - just that it represents a massive chunk of what a family of 4 needs. If daddy government is paying half of your annual food bill, you should be OK. If you are not, there are other issues at play

If you buy in bulk and cook you could come pretty close at about $100 a week

If they primarily went to the most lower class version of veganism, possibly.
You're not going to get much meat (especially fish) on that budget. Even chicken is approaching $3/lb at most stores.
You're going to also need to stick to canned veggies and fruits. The fresh version of both will be way too expensive.

You mean because of eating out?

A common theme…

Chicken is $1.49 a lb at walmart and has been that or less for years.

It’s actually $4200 a month

Food stamps are meant to HELP. Not be a career, you God damned idiot.
It is supplemental. Not "sit your arse down, the taxpayer will carry the full load."

Wtf are you buying?
I only eat ribeye steak, grass fed beef, bacon (Wright Brand) grass fed whey isolate protein all the stuff that’s supposed to be super expensive and don’t come close to that.

Nope. Walmart sells a 10 lb bag of chicken leg quarters for $6.
Two of those would get a family of 4 through a few weeks or maybe the whole month depending on other meals.

I could absolutely do it
It takes planning but I could do it
Eggs or cereal for breakfast
Sandwiches for lunch
Dinners that make enough for leftovers the next day. Red beans, lasagna, chili, gumbo, stews, pork chops, etc

You’re not entitled to the complete range of food. In no way is that a right or should be a right. Rice, beans, apples, chicken here and there, frozen veggies and you’ll be fine.

Correct.
But we spend at least $2500-3000 at the grocery store every month.

Poor people should not be eating processed crap food.
Yes, they can survive on $4200 a year.

We pretty much only shop sales.
Winn-Dixie is getting ready to leave the area. I’m really gonna miss their BOGO deals.
