Dems to introduce bill to fund SNAP benefits, more à la carte funding bills to come

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has seized on the plan that Republicans floated – and then discarded – to soften the government shutdown's sting for some federal workers and aid beneficiaries.
Schumer's (D-N.Y.) strategy had been to withhold votes across the board while Democrats fought for Affordable Care Act subsidies. Now he's pushing a partial reopening of government, without those ACA subsidies as part of the equation.
It's an attempt to make Republicans own more of the acute and escalating pain of the government shutdown.
"Democrats will introduce a clean, standalone bill today to ... keep SNAP benefits flowing," Schumer said on the Senate floor.

Schumer and top Democrats see Senate Majority Leader John Thune's (R-S.D.) decision not to pursue a "rifle shot" strategy as an opportunity to apply pressure on Republicans.
After Thune's first three plans to open up all – or part – of the government failed, he suggested last week that he was open to "rifle shots" to fund parts of the government.
But Republicans realized such bills would reduce their overall leverage, Axios reported on Monday.
On Tuesday, pursuing that plan was called off in a closed-door luncheon, with Vice President Vance voicing his firm opposition.
Look for Senate Democrats to add to Tuesday's push to release SNAP funds, with more à la carte funding bills in the coming days.

Okay, they want to negotiate, let’s negotiate.
We’ll give them funding for SNAP benefits, in return for mandatory Voter ID in all federal elections, a complete ban on mail-in ballots, no accepting ballots after the day before an election, and no counting ballots the day after an election. All of these codified provisions will come with severe mandatory federal prison sentences.

Shouldn't this be the way it's done anyway?
And blame Thune/GOP for putting it out there and not having a plan in place. They can't help but be losers.

If this is so important, why have they voted to keep the government shut down a dozen times?

Oh? Clean bills?

Good idea, Chucky. Why didn't we think of that? Single issue bills, what a stroke of genius.

If the republicans had a set of nuts they would jump all over this from 100 different angles.

standalone bill
Seems like progress, generally.

They fricking better gobble this up. Doing it during a shutdown is especially useful. Just fund things as they come up as needed.

How do you introduce a bill when the government is closed and Congress is not in session??
Posted on 10/29/25 at 10:10 am to OGTiger
How about we shut down EVERYTHING but Congress and the Whitehouse until CONGRESS actually puts together and passes a real and complete line item budget! One 'the people' can see !!!

So if they are introducing bills to get people paid benefits, then that must mean they are the ones controlling the Shutdown.

Walz must believe that the shell game of hillbillies in rural Kentucky trading food stamps for soda then selling that soda back to the store for cash is actual economic activity.

Also forgetting about the people that sell their SNAP benefits for 50 cents on the dollar so they can pay for their tattoos and PS5.

I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand I love the idea of standalone bills but on the other hand fudge the democrats.

I actually like this. Single subject funding bills are the way to go.

I’d still leverage certain things based on what we agree to pass.
If SNAP funding gets passed, then military pay better be passed too.

It's positively heartbreaking that innocent families who legitimately need this assistance will be caught up in the backlash against the fraud, waste and abuse that absolutely comprises probably 80% of this assistance program.
That said, this is one of our best opportunities to shine a spotlight on the freeloaders, identify them and cut out the cancer forever.
There is absolutely zero reason for non-citizens to be on this program. Sorry, not sorry.
The entire ordeal needs to be burned to the ground, and start over in the image of the WIC program..
