The author points out that none of the three active coaches who have won national titles had head coaching experience before they got their present job, and only 6 of the current top 25 teams are coached by someone who was a head coach at another power conference school before getting his current job.

Kelly was a big name. And when Notre Dame hired him, he was the right guy for that time. But he was never the right fit at LSU, a lesson the school should heed as it goes looking again.

All this really means is someone who is going to work his butt off to build a winning program. Nothing else matters.

Thing is that right fit isn’t always apparent. I guess you can say from the South, but Saban is from WV and was coaching in the Midwest prior to here. Hungry to succeed, but you have to have to be able to tell if it’s just interview talk or they are actually hungry. I mean what candidate says they aren’t hungry in an interview.

I wouldn't say that "fit" means someone from the South necessarily, but certainly someone who understands the commitment it would take to win in the cutthroat SEC, someone who understands the modern college football landscape, and can relate to young men today. You're right that anyone can say all the right things in an interview, so I'd certainly want to have evidence of how well a coach motivates and teaches the players on his current team (whether he is a head coach or an assistant) and whether they display both toughness and skill.

Why wouldn’t y’all throw the bank at Joe Brady? The only problem y’all had this year was your QB and the offense. The best offense I’ve ever seen was your 2019 offense with him calling the plays. He knows everything about LSU and what it takes to win there.

Rumored he hated recruiting and preferred the NFL.

It’s basically the same game now with NIL and the portal. I don’t think the in house visits have the same importance now.

Can’t go after a Mullen or Brady that don’t like recruiting. Yes u can have recruiting staff and GMs do most of it but at the end of the day the players and parents want to feel the love from the head guy and if he isn’t in to that part it will show and u will lose some. Nil helps eliminate some of this but not all of it. definitely need someone that is a guru on one side of the ball too whether they call the plays or not. That way they only have to nail the coordinator for one side and not both. Let’s face it. Everyone minus Kirby and Day rhat have won recent championships in this era and kept their teams up there are a crap shoot. No guarantees. Do your research and pick the guy u feel is the best shot at getting u there and go with it. Who knows who that is. I wouldn’t want to make that decision but will support whoever it is until they show they definitely aren’t that guy that can get it done.

Paul for all his flashy whites, was a drab coach who loathed the forward pass and loved punting on 3rd down.
