JASPER COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) - A truck hauling monkeys has overturned in Jasper County. According to Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson, the truck was hauling monkeys to a testing facility in Florida when it overturned around the 117-mile marker just north of Heidelberg.

Several monkeys are reportedly on the loose. Johnson says that if you see the monkeys, you should not approach them and to call 911 immediately. The monkeys reportedly pose potential health threats and are aggressive. .

What kind of testing were they doing to those monkeys?

as an aside, why was the truck hauling something from Tulane in New Orleans headed up north on I-59 around Meridian to go to Florida?

For the life of me, I can’t think of the name of that movie where a monkey escaped and a town was going to be destroyed by the government or something like that. Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

I’m not saying this is ideal, but this is the perfect time of year for something like this to happen.

Officials said the animals weigh about 40 pounds each, are aggressive toward humans and require personal protective equipment to handle. The monkeys also carry hepatitis C, herpes and COVID, authorities said.

Tulane advised that if any of the monkeys leave the wreck site they should be shot, officials said.

Wonder if driver has a California license…

Does Tulane have a testing facility using monkeys that would make sense for this truck to be driving thru Jasper County in Mississippi to deliver the monkeys in Florida?

According to Johnson, the monkeys carry hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID. Tulane has confirmed that it will send a crew to pick up the monkeys that are still caged on Wednesday.

UPDATE:

quote:

All but one of the escaped monkeys have been destroyed. We have been in contact with an animal diposal company to help handle the situation.
Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries is also on site with our local law enforcement.
We are continuing to look for the one monkey that is still on the loose.

Wasn't there a set of monkeys loose in the last couple of years in the northeast... and I think we had some escape in south carolina too.

You think there'd be some more rigorous precautions in place.
