After LSU kicks the tires on Kiffin, Sumrall would be a home run hire, IMO.

He can’t. He just hears other people say this

Same thing with people repeating the “Woodward responsible for the 2 largest buyouts” line.

I like Sumrall, but at this point, he's a decent fallback plan if we whiff on our top 5 or so.

I personally wouldn't be pissed with him as i like the way he has filled the gaps at Tulane after the major exodus when Fritz left and quickly had them playing well. His teams are tough and he has done well in a tough situation at his last 2 stops.

That said, he has limited experience to be taking over an LSU football program and hiring Tulane's coach wouldn't stroke the right egos.

I don't understand why people are putting Sumrall so high. Make Kiffin, Lanning, Key, Lea and any other P4 coach that looks solid enough to make the jump so "NO." If all of that fails then move on to coaches like Sumrall, Golesh, Danielson, etc

Everybody wants the big guy, which I understand. But, with the big guy comes a big pay day for whoever that is, I don't see that happening, and I don't want that to happen.

Resources are better at LSU than at Tulane. He's done really well with less talent, and his teams, even at Troy, played hard. You could probably structure his contract with incentives instead of everything up front, and he's young and relatable to his players.

Tulane has the one loss to Old Miss, see how the rest of their season goes, but IMO he's gone after this season. I don't want to face him at another SEC school. Again, this is if Kiffen stays at Old Miss. I don't think the coach at Oregon is leaving.

How’s he a home run? Seems like a riskier chance than Billy?

I think he's got a high chance of getting the job because I think LSU is going to want to get a coach before signing day to keep the class together, and that will eliminate the coaches in the playoffs.

Also, I think there is HUGE chance Kiffin will string LSU along just to make sure they have the worst possible outcome in their coaching search. Guy isn't dumb. Hurt your opponent.

Let me guess you think he makes 500k a year at Tulane so LSU can give him a million with a 75k bonus for winning the SEC.

Because Woodward is hell bent on names. Sometimes it works and other times it bites you. I agree we need to be a bit smarter but wake me up when that happens.

No, but you're not giving Sumrall a $50 million buyout either.

Tell me which Coach of the 15-20 who get mentioned for the job, is not at a school in which the resources are better at LSU than where they are coaching?

I recently heard a Tulane alum and a former Tulane player under Fritz talking bad about Sumrall saying his in game management is bad. Take that how you want.

Who knows if Woody is still the AD to make this next HC hire? LSU still needs to bring in the new president.

While my opinion doesn't mean much I have said repeatedly on here that Sumrall isn't ready for a power job.

He would benefit greatly by staying at Tulane for another year or two, getting a new OC and hiring an older coach (like Jerry Kill) to help him grow as a coach.

The older coach we should've hired was Willie Fritz who built Tulane into what it is now. That's water under the bridge now. I think hiring Sumrall is just as risky as hiring a hotshot assistant from the college ranks or an NFL assistant.

Drinkwitz went from App St. to Mizzou
Cignetti went from JMU to Indiana
DeBoer went from Fresno to Washington
Heupel went from UCF (as an AAC school) to Tennessee

On the flip side, USC and LSU hired HC's from power conf. program with multiple CFP/BCS appearances on their resumes. Neither have lived up to expectations.

The point its, hires can be a crapshoot. There is no "sure fire" approach. I don't think many are saying Sumrall should be the No. 1 choice, but someone to look at if/when the top choices don't pan out. Guys like Day, Cignetti, Smart, Elko aren't leaving their current jobs to come to LSU (even if they may feign interest for negotiating purposes). Lanning and Kiffin would likely listen, but they are at spots who love them and who wouldn't let them go without a big financial incentive to stay. Key and Lea are at their alma maters. That's an emotional pull no other school can match.

If/when you get beyond those names there are even less "sure things".

FWIW: If you gave the fans a vote, neither Saban, Miles, nor Orgeron would have been hired when they were. Conversely, the Kelly hire was looked at as a grand slam.

It goes without saying that it is harder to get those P4 guys. I would be excited about Sumrall. I think he has done a great job at Tulane. I have a friend who is a freshman QB for him and I hear nothing but good things. If we don not land the whale, then this would be the homerun hire. I also would not mind Kevin Shepherd.
