Why did Bill Arnsparger leave so quickly?

Both he and Saban came and went quickly. Why is that?

If I remember right, Arnsparger took the AD job at Fla..

Because he wanted to be AD and Head coach… Left for Florida and hired Steve Spurrier from Duke.

He went to Florida as AD. Then hired spurrier I believe at some point.

Didn’t he have a spat with the AD for taking dale brown’s side?

Arnsparger had issues with Brodhead and Dale, and UF AD was a much better position at the time than LSU Football HC.

So did Saban if you think about it. Someone once said, it’s not what people say but what they do that tells you what they think.

He was responsible for getting us Dalton Hilliard! Legend!

Bill got tired of all the politics and Dale Brown. Also, he and Broadhead had falling out. The Liberty Bowl had something to do with it. Think the team thought they were going a good bowl destination and Broadhead made backdoor deal to go to Memphis at the last minute, which upset Bill. Plus, it didn’t help that Broadhead got busted for wiretapping. My dad was on Bill’s staff. We had to spend Christmas on Memphis and it sucked!

Armsparger had a reputation as a good coach and not so good recruiter.

Didn’t bill give the players per diem and said see ya in Memphis on this date?

No he wasn’t. Hilliard was a freshman in 1982 under Stovall. Arnsparger came in 84. You can give Arnsparger credit for Hodson, Harvey Williams, Wendell Davis, and many other greats but not Hilliard.

Yes, Bill let the players drive on their own to Memphis and get per diem. This was to piss Broadhead off. One of the coldest games I have ever been to. Players didn’t want to be there and it showed. Outside of Norman Jefferson, game was awful. I think we were suppose to go the old Aloha Bowl. Then Broadhead made the deal to go to the Liberty.

quote:Dang, that brings back memories of my childhood. That was the Christmas that we moved my grandparents to somewhere out in BFE New Mexico. Finally got them out there, unloaded, and started heading home.Whatever night that game was played, we stopped and spent the night at a Motel 6 somewhere in west Texas.

They were a super economy motel back in those days. It was like $0.25 to have black and white TV or $1.00 to watch in color. Since the Tigers were playing, we splurged on color TV.
Honestly, it was the only time in my 5+ decades that I was ever in a hotel/motel without free TV. IIRC, that Motel 6 had TVs which required a cartridge to turn on, and the front desk would rent you one for either B&W or color, depending on your budget.

Broadhead got jealous of Arnsparger’s success.
