Arnsparger and Saban

Both were done as the result of visionary leaders directing and pulling the trigger on the hire: Broadhead and Emmert.

This is what has me worried.

Worried that Landry will make the hire?

That’s true. Arnsparger was elite. I’m
More bullish on the Miles tenure then most.

Miles was a great hire, and he was 28-21 at Oklahoma State. Leadership had some good insight on that hire.

I'd put him as a good hire and a decent to good coach.

We wasn't a great football coach.

Skip was looking for someone who would be here for a long time , raise a family & not have go through the Saban yearly threats again. Les shows up for the interview talking about how Bo Schembechler respected the hell out of LSU and how much his kids would love BR. Skip had his man. From that regard, it was a great hire.

Miles was a great hire. Saban unfortunately came back to college.

When we hired Les, we didn't need a visonary type hire.

I kind of feel like we do this time.

Dietzel was the greatest football coach before Saban. The outrage that erupted when he announced he was leaving for Army West Point was a thing of legends.

He wasn’t a great coach, but he did take LSU to two National Titles, won 1, and won 114 games for a .770 win percentage. That would be 100 other schools greatest coach ever.

If Les hadn't been so stubborn, he would have lasted a few more years.

And let’s not kid ourselves-
A whole lot of luck.
Almost all coaching hires have timing and luck as major factors. The ability to totally see who the next “it” factor hire is- is typically part insight, part roll of the dice.

Probably a new AD with input from Landry since he will basically be choosing the new AD.

Oh, for sure.

And the ability to see past and not be clouded by "conventional wisdom."

Kelly's hire was nothing if not a pure conventional wisdom type pick.

Miles turned out to not be a bad hire so you can add him to that list.

There’s nothing difficult about this search, the obvious and best choice is the Lane Train

Saban left for the NFL. That was and is a step up. Arnsparger left to be AD at Florida. At that time being an AD was a step up though he did have issues with Brodhead and Dale Brown.

He wasn’t great, but he wasn’t just decent, either. He was a very good coach.
