BUENOS AIRES—President Javier Milei scored a decisive political win Sunday, strengthening his position in Argentina’s Congress and securing a lifeline for his audacious free-market revolution backed by President Trump.

With nearly 99% of votes counted, Milei’s Freedom Advances party won almost 41% of the national vote, more than doubling its representation in Congress. That means his party and allies secured at least one-third of the seats in both chambers—the critical threshold that allows Milei to preserve his veto power and defend his sweeping decrees.

The result, stronger than most polls had predicted, gives Milei fresh political momentum after months of unrest over deep spending cuts and a grinding recession last year. It also shores up his standing with Washington and the International Monetary Fund, which have tied future financial support to the survival of his austerity experiment. Market analysts expect Argentine bonds and the peso to rally when trading opens Monday, reflecting relief that Milei still has political traction after taking office two years ago.

“Today marks the beginning of building a great Argentina,” Milei told cheering supporters in downtown Buenos Aires late Sunday. “This result is nothing more and nothing less than the confirmation of the mandate we assumed in 2023,” he said, pointing to it as proof of voters’ “determination to change the destiny of the nation irreversibly.”

Another win for good guys and a loss for the socialists.

No. NYC is about to embrace it and they deserve the pain they will feel.

NYC will get what they deserve.

We didn't fight hard enough against Marxism in our hemisphere. The Monroe doctrine had a purpose, but it would have been more important in the 50s.

In this case, we need them on that wall.

Yes, it really pisses me off to say that, but it's true.

They beat the shite out of the Peronists. Peronists had the worst showing they've had in over 30 years.

Crazy how fast people will reject socialism when actual cuts to government and spending are made.

So, to stop Socialism in Argentina, US taxpayers are funding their government? Sounds like Socialism.

I fully support sending money to countries that are culturally alligned with us. If it can help keep the mojo going. It's a good investment in my opinion.

Exactly, its hilarious but unsurprising that a fox news regurgitator wouldn't recognize this. Congrats to Argentina on its free money to fund socialism.

It’s not free money but a guaranteed one. Of course if the election went sideways that guarantee would be lost.

How so?

This wasn’t some military coup followed by installing some pro US guy.

He was elected when Biden was president and is labeled far right by the media.

This is good. I was worried the economic turmoil would cost Milei his political power

His reforms are causing some short term pain but Argentina will be better off in the long run due to them. Ripping the band aid off is what Milei has done and what I wish we would do here

I’d much rather us spend money and use our military to stabilize nations in our hemisphere instead of Africa or Middle East. We need to keep China and communism/socialism out of South America.
