Why would there be any negotiations about a buyout?

If you’re Kelly… “pay me” /end negotiations

Even the terms should have been worked out in the original contract right?
Maybe the Greg brooks thing factors in?

If Kelly just doesn’t want to be doing this anymore. May give up a few million to walk away now

We have a mitigation clause. We can waive it if he agrees to take less money on the way out.

I’m sure it’s based on how quickly he’s actually paid etc.

because his salary will be offset by future contracts anyway

He could walk away with more overall money if he wants to keep coaching if he's willing to take less on the buyout and likely as a lump sum

Threaten to pull every resource from him and see if he wants to stay

Threat of litigation for breach of the contract terms, for one.

Threat of protracted public humiliation and an exhausting ordeal, as well.

There is always some source of leverage.

Greg brooks and other things like taking off during a bye week and treating the job like it’s fricking McDonald’s

Kelly could ask for less money if paid up front or if they take out a clause that allows the media to not effect his buy out. LSU could offer him more money if Kelly agrees to longer terms… a lot can be negotiated.

You also lower it for a lump sum now instead of drawing it out over remainder of contract.

The payout will be a lesser amount with no resistance. If he refuses, he has to battle for the full payout

I agree, if I’m Kelly I’m making you fire me for the full buyout. I will continue to trot Nuss out there and endure the chants. Humiliate the fan base, AD, and the university until you pay me the remaining balance. It’s too much money to walk away from. BK is the right kind of POS to force it.

You only say that because you're not in that situation. Say what you want about BK or any coach out there but they have way harder day to day jobs than you and I do and continuing to look like you're doing your best to perform that job while everyone is watching you would be so stressful I can't even imagine.

Lump sum, maybe go into media in a couple years. Make more than sticking around and work way less.

Expecting someone to honor a written contract is not being a POS.

I'm no Kelly apologist but that is why there is a contract.

Now if he wants to negotiate less as a lump sum, that is an option, and at his age, I would consider it.
