Older guy I know of made a mistake and wired $10,000 to a scammer. He contacted his banks fraud department and they said the money is gone and there is nothing they can do. Is there such a thing as "fraud collectors" that attempt to recover the money, for a fee? Or is it even possible to track exactly where the money went.

He fricked

Hopefully, lesson learned for him. 10k is pretty small for getting scammed through wire fraud. I have seen people lose hundreds of thousands on wire scams.

Serious question: what kind of scam could one pull to get someone to wire them $10k or more?

Are they posing as a bank or collections or something?

I don't know how they do it, but a lot of old people lose a lot of IQ with age. These scammers target old people for that reason. We need a License to Kill secret agent that can track these predators down shoot them in the head or at least take one eye and tell them don't make me come back.

I once saw a doc which showed a training class for phone marketers

They were taught to target old people, especially widow(ers)s, Their children are grown and gone, and they are lonely. The students are taught to begin not w/a sales pitch but w/"Hello, how are you today?" - good manners requiring a response to a question.

Psychlogically, the longer people stay on the phone the less likely they are to hang up, as they feel "invested" in the call. So if you keep lonely old people on the phone by showing interest in them, you soften them up for the pitch.

If it's his business tell him to check his CGL policy. Some have cyber crime coverages. Check whatever insurance policies he has.

3 days after my step-dad passed, my mom got a call from someone "at his work in HR" telling her she needed to buy $2,000 worth of gift cards and give them the numbers, so she wouldn't have his pension cut down to 20%

She called me in a panic, crying on her way to buy the gift cards... Thankfully she called me, because I was able to convince her to meet me and talk about it

She had no idea it was a scam

Hard to believe in this day and age the bank simply shrugs its shoulders when a wire transfer is done fraudulently or incorrectly. But Chase told me that if you wire money and wire it incorrectly you’re SOL. Why is that? If you bounced a check I’m sure they’d find you. Why are wire transfers any different?

We should demand reparations from these shithole countries that allow this or commence bombing.
