Don’t tell me the fans’ expectations are too high. If anything, the bar has been set embarrassingly low. When was the last time LSU fans said, “Just make the top 12 by the end of the year, please”? Yet somehow, that’s become the standard under Kelly - and LSU hasn’t even sniffed it in four seasons.

Vanderbilt, even in the NIL era, doesn’t have the resources to compete with LSU. That loss wasn’t just bad - it was unacceptable. Sure, Alabama lost to Vanderbilt last year, but that’s a first-year coach figuring things out. By Year 2, that same coach handed Vanderbilt a 30-14 beatdown. This is Year 4 for Brian Kelly.

No one expects a national championship every season. That standard is nearly impossible - it requires both greatness and luck. But at LSU, that’s the level the program has lived at for two decades. That bar wasn’t set by delusional fans; it was set by three consecutive head coaches who all won national titles - two of whom never won anything of note anywhere else. But forget championships for a second.

The conversation now is about something far more modest: making the top 12 once in four years. Kelly is 8–11 in regular-season road games at LSU, and that includes some forgettable wins. If we ignore meaningless bowl games - like the ones where half the roster opts out - here’s what those eight road wins look like:

Everybody sees it too. Kelly can’t explain his way out of this.

The only thing that makes it better is winning now.

I like Preston and enjoy listening to him. He’s very calm- not a drama queen.

They’re zero reasons to think BK can win a championship here after the last 4 seasons

Would you trust BK with the 2019 team ? I wouldn’t. And I’m no and never have been a “ fire the coach” guy. I think we know what we have in him and it’s not enough.

Kelly's best season here was his first with a depleted roster.

Let that sink in.

How much will it set the program back if they give him one more year?

I’m assuming that’s what he’s going to get.

Just the team or the staff minus the head coach? That makes a huge difference to my answer.

Saban, Les, and Coach O (Geaux Tigers). What did they possess that Kelly does not?

Fire in the belly. Everyone knows about Saban, but the other two wanted to win just as badly and their teams reflected it. Kelly's teams are softer than a newborn's first poo.

When your OL is not good (and everyone knew this before the season started) you use a mobile QB not a meatball who needs a lot of time and protection. Just look at the Vandy game, 4 LSU players beat their OL and chase the QB and can not touch him.

In 2023, LSU finished regular season:
13th in the AP Poll (12th in Final)
13th in the Coaches Poll (12th in Final)
13th in CFP Poll

That more than qualifies as sniffing it. The arguments to put Kelly on hot seat or to fire him can be made without hyperbole.

Using post bowl game AP Poll as they are more easily found than regular season:

LSU finished in the top 12:
Saban - 2 of 5 seasons (40%)
Miles - 5 of 11 seasons (45%)
Miles/O - 0 of 1 season (0%)
O - 2 of 5 seasons (40%)
Kelly - 1 of 3 seasons (33%)

LSU finished unranked:
Saban - 1 of 5 seasons (20%)
Miles - 2 of 11 seasons (18%)
Miles/O - 0 of 1 season (0%)
O - 2 of 5 seasons (40%)
Kelly - 1 of 3 seasons (33%)

Fans think the Vandy loss sealed his fate

When in reality, it is the 1st mark against him for the athletic department in regards to his future job status.

While Sloan is ineffective, the limited physicality Nuss has is glaring and the play calling reflects the liability that is Nussmeir.

Unpack this if you don't mind - I thought Pate's sourcing saying that going into Vandy he had heard the result would trigger one of two types of conversations. That was ambiguous but noteworthy to hear.

BK isn’t a good enough coach to play consistently against SEC competition. That’s it. He came from ND where they play legitimately heavily inferior competition for 90% of their games…of course he “won a lot”

LSU has more actual tough games on its schedule just this year than ND does in any 3 year period this century.
