This guy is so incredibly dependent on his coordinators that he grabbed $100MM off of their success.

You put him with a Matt House, Kelly can't do anything to stop the bleeding.

You put him with a Polian on ST, Kelly can't do anything to stop the bleeding.

You put him with a Sloan on offense, Kelly can't do anything to stop the bleeding.

This guy can't do shite unless he's got actual legit coaches around him. We've been bamboozled.

This is a weird complaint. Most coaches struggle with poor coordinators

This is every coach. There are many areas to critique Kelly, but this one misses the mark entirely.

Sounds like, at one time anyway, he had a pretty good eye for assistants.

I think there's a difference between struggling with poor coordinators and being absolutely incapable of doing anything with poor coordinators.

Kirby, Day, Lanning - none of them are ever, EVER having a defense as bad as 2023. IDC who is running that side of the ball for them.

I actually thought this was you making a case to hire Blake Baker. That would have made more sense from your post.

This is one of the most baffling things to me, his complete botching of major assistant hires. You'd think a guy with his experience wouldn't hire someone like House or give someone like Sloan a job for which he is unqualified for.

Have you seen the list of coaches Saban had as coordinators & position coaches since his time at LSU? He always put together a monster staff. This isn't the gotcha you thought it was.

His job is to hire good coaches. He can't seem to do that at LSU.

If we being honest....all 3 have better teams records and are better teams. This is an indication that the game has passed him and he needs to Go...

He has a great track record with DCs

I think he wanted White from Kentucky and took House as second prize. House was actually solid his first year. Most people were very happy with the hire. but the talent level took a nosedive when all the experienced transfer DBs left.

The Rant is now mad at BK for hiring good coordinators at his prior job.

The Rant is also mad at BK for hiring bad coordinators at LSU.

Yes I remember how Saban made a point to always surround himself with bad coordinators bc only a shitty head coach needs good assistants

OP sounds like a woman who got dumped and is talking shite about her ex to her friends

You're absolutely correct. So much of the time Kelly has been at LSU does not match his history - it's been baffling. There is something "artificial" about it. We didn't get the Kelly that coached a Notre Dame.

What’s the complaint here?

Sounds like BK had a history of hiring good coordinators, which is exactly what the HC is supposed to do.

Maybe not. But none of those dudes have been HCs for a full 10 years. They are all in their primes. Ryan Day is 46 and in his 7th season. Dan Lanning is 39 and in his 4th. Kirby is 49 and in his 10th season.

So they were all hired—for their FIRST HC jobs—while they were in their 30s. They were all assistant coaches when given the keys to 3 of best programs in the country.

1) one of LSU fans favorite mantras—especially when complaining about Sloan—is “LSU is not the place to learn on the job.” NONE of y’all would have accepted any of these 3 coaches as LSU’s HC when they were hired. Or any assistant. Another mantra LSU fans like to throw out when it comes to coaching searches is “remember Archer.” Hell, most of y’all wouldn’t even accept a guy who was already a HC, just not at the P4 level. Then we get the “Remember Hallman” crowd. You can’t be pleased.

2) Let’s see how Kirby, Day, and Lanning are doing in their mid 60s after coaching for 30+ seasons. I’m gonna bet they have some stinkers on both sides of the ball by that time.

3) Nick Saban, the greatest coach in college football history, had coordinators—on BOTH sides of the ball—that Bama fans absolutely loathed and wanted run of out of town by the time he retired. Golding, BOB, Major Applewhite, Tommy Rees—these are just off the top of my head. The longer you coach, the longer you have for shite to happen. Your emotion is blinding you to this very obvious truth. It is making you unobjective and lacking self awareness.

4) Did 2023 suck because we had an atrocious defense to go with one of the greatest offenses in CFB history? Absolutely. (I still had a blast following that team, but I’m in my mid 40s and have learned to have some perspective). Does it suck that we have a really good defense this year (I do think it was elite when fully healthy, but clearly not deep enough to sustain some of the major injuries we’ve had) and now it’s the offense not pulling its weight? Absolutely. Now, mathematically, we can still win the NC, but all signs point to that being super unrealistic and an 8-4 regular season with a bowl win to finish 9-4 as probably the ceiling.

5) LSU is not the program a lot of y’all have convinced yourselves we are. We’ve never been a top 5 team consistently. Never been a top 10 one over an extended period of time.
We are a 9-3, top 10-12 ish program that has enough talent that when the stars align we can put together not just NC teams, but all time NC teams. But those stars don’t align nearly as often as y’all think they do or realistically think they can.
