China - public restrooms - users must watch ads in exchange for toilet paper

Public restrooms in parts of China are testing new dispensers that release toilet paper only after users scan a QR code and watch an online advertisement, a system that has drawn widespread public criticism. Local governments have not disclosed how many units are in operation or whether data collected will be anonymized or monitored.
The mounted paper dispensers are equipped with optical scanners that display a QR code. Users must use their smartphones to connect to the dispenser, triggering an app-based video advertisement that runs for a few seconds.
When the ad concludes, the machine releases a controlled length of paper. Those unwilling to engage with the promotional content can bypass the process by paying ... about seven US cents.

If it reduces the burden on the taxpayer I'm for it. People also have the option of not using it, paying, or bringing their own TP.

Most public restrooms in China do not have toilet paper at all. People actually carry around their own roll with them in China. So this is comparatively pretty convenient.

That’s an interesting slant on advertising.

Stickers with malware-qc code will be placed over the legit ones.
People will be hacked like never before and their accounts will metaphorically go down the shitter.

Nah, I would definitely bring my own.
However, if China was giving out fried rice in exchange for watching a couple ads, I could go for that.

Toilet paper roll theft is a major issue over there. They went to facial recognition dispensers several years ago. You're only allowed so much TP a day.

I go to Shanghai for work. I would typically avoid public restrooms, but most nicer places have bidets.

Yeah, India, Uganda too. Lots of places in African and Asia. Most toilets are squat types with a water hose; and be careful which hand you shake. I've learned to ALWAYS have toilet paper with me. I needed it this morning at a port-o-let in the USA.

This shite never reduces burden on the taxpayer. Why do people always lap up the lie that bullshite like this going to reduce costs?
It's like when people who go "Oh! If they put ads on uniforms the tickets might get cheaper!"
Guess what? They never do and never will.

What if people are in a rush and leave their phone behind? I guess they'll have to use their socks.

Lots of places in Europe charge you €1-2 to use a public toilet.
