The president of the United States is deploying masked troops to the streets of blue cities, working to put friendly billionaires in charge of the media environment, and attempting to jail his personal enemies.

Can any democracy come back from this?

Earlier this year, two teams of researchers published papers trying to answer this exact question — and came to seemingly opposite conclusions.

Both papers focused on what they call “democratic U-turns:” where a country starts out as a democracy, moves toward authoritarianism, and then quickly recovers. The first team’s conclusions were optimistic: They identified 102 U-turn cases since 1900 and found that, in 90 percent of them, the result was “restored or even improved levels of democracy.” The second team focused on 21 recent cases and inverted the findings — concluding that “nearly 90 percent” of alleged U-turns were short-lived mirages.

What all of this means for America’s future

The lack of awareness is stunning.

Many think Trump is the U-Turn from Dems authoritarianism. They conveniently ignore that.

By blue you mean cities who advertised themselves as sanctuary to illegal people and offered them room, money, food, drivers licenses on and on.

Where were the published papers during the autopen administration’s weaponization and “disinformation” campaign against conservatives??

Vox: Can we "recover" from normal?

Truly detached from reality.

The Democrats think of themselves and democracy as a "common good" party, hanging their hat on entitlements, authoritarianism (see example: COVID), and the only freedoms that they actually care about, sexual deviance, denying being mentally ill, and their blessed abortion. They will shite on the constitution to achieve all of their goals.

The GOP on the other hand correlates democracy with God given freedoms and the constitution even though they sometimes shite on the constitution as well (see example: Patriot Act).

The "Paper" started with a Lie.

This has never been a "Democracy".

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to a president not winning like Trump wins. He’s set the bar. We aren’t going back to 6-6 again, it’s national championship or you’re fired.

Yahoo News had a very original indictment of Trump's good economy. They said he caused the stock market to go record highs and that is terrible news. Why? Because when it falls it will be an extreme hit to our economy. If the stock market was just mediocre then the coming drop would be small.

The irony, of course, is that Trump is the u-turn away from authoritarianism.
