On October 19, 1977, two days after releasing their album Street Survivors, Lynyrd Skynyrd performed at the Greenville Memorial Auditorium in Greenville, South Carolina. The following day they boarded a Convair CV-240 airplane to take them to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they were to perform at Louisiana State University. The plane ran out of fuel near the end of the flight.[2][6] Upon realizing that the plane had insufficient fuel, the pilots attempted to navigate to McComb Airport, about 10 miles (16 km) northeast of the eventual crash site in Amite County, Mississippi, but soon realized that the plane would not make it. As a last resort, they attempted an emergency landing in an open field about 300 yd (270 m) from where the plane eventually went down.[7] Despite their efforts, at approximately 6:52 pm[1] the plane skimmed about 100 yd (90 m) along the top of the tree line before smashing into a large tree and splitting into pieces near Gillsburg, Mississippi.

My favorite part.

quote:

Artimus Pyle, the drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd, was shot in the shoulder after the band's 1977 plane crash. He sought help at a nearby farmhouse, but the startled homeowner, who mistook him for an intruder, fired a warning shot that hit Pyle. Pyle later helped rescuers locate the crash site, and the farmer helped him after the misunderstanding was cleared up

Survive a plain crash, then get shot by a redneck.
Damn.

What a fantastic band!

Their old stuff on YouTube, that is in Black & white, is exceptional.

My sister had tickets to go see the Baton Rouge show that never happened.
After the crash shew threw away her ticket.

I stopped by the crash site memorial about a year ago. There was an old guy there who was on board the plane when it went down. He was sitting under a tent talking to people and telling stories.

He had been a security guy for a record label, and assigned to the Stones on their summer of '77 tour. When the tour was over the label assigned him to Skynyrd. He had some great stories.

He made a short movie on YouTube making himself look like the lone hero of the story. Some people actually dispute his claim that he was shot.

Was it Artimus or Billy Powell that claimed he got to Cassie Gaines and held her in his arms as she died? I think Rossington or one of the other survivors called BS on that story.

I’m not sure on that one. Looks like the movie I watched isn’t free anymore and I’m not paying for it.

I really get the impression that he uses his somewhat fame to promote his own agendas. He’s an anti gun vegetarian, and he tries to present that as the views of the whole band.

This is a well done documentary on the crash. It has interviews with several people who were first on scene.

this is one of those things that like 50k people claim to have had tickets that threw them away even though the venue only held 9k people.

It’s like every Baw that went to Hs in the south in the 80s drove to school with a rifle and shotgun on the gun rack on their rear windshield.

Nostalgia is a hell of a thing.

Dang, didn't realize the crash was only a couple months after Elvis died. Must have been a hell of a low time for the music loving Southerner.

It was Billy Powell.

What a terrible day. Stevie Gaines had just joined the band after being introduced to them by Cassie. Street Survivors is such a great album. You can tell Ronnie thought a lot of Stevie by including his songs on the album and letting him share lead vocals.

Just realized 1977 was a tragic year for musicians.

8/16/1977 - Elvis Presley dies

10/20/1977 - Lynyrd Skynyrd's plane crash

2 big events less than 2 months apart.
