For those that think Nuss has played "fine," go watch Flynn break him down on OTB

For those of you that were quick to come here and prop Nuss up after the game with all the "Nuss is not the problem" bullshite, go watch Flynn break down the film on OTB this morning. Nuss, a 5th year senior, is absolutely god awful at making pre-snap and post-snap reads. There are high school QBs that are doing a better job of reading defensive alignment and coverages pre-snap and making the right decision in the RPO game or finding the best matchup in the passing game. Simply put, Nuss is not getting it done.
That does not excuse the defenses performance, but anybody that thinks Nuss played well or even "okay" on saturday is a buffoon.

It’s not helping Nuss that his OLine can’t protect and he gets hit every play. Hard for a QB to settle into the flow of a game when running for his life.

It’s hard to fathom a son of an NFL OC could be so poor at basic fundamentals.
Between the rumors of Nuss not being a hard worker and the way he plays the game in fear, it really looks like he just doesn’t enjoy football.

Has Garrett been perfect? No. But we know that guy threw for 4k yards in the league last season and CAN be productive for you. Everything you don't like about this LSU offense begins with the line of scrimmage. Football is a simple game. Can you block and can you tackle? LSU's receivers consistently have better run blocking grades than your offensive line does. That's a massive problem.
The point is that maybe Nussmeier isn't Joe Burrow but he's a good enough player to win with. You cannot win consistently with this level of offensive line play.

This is so ridiculous. Nussmeier is getting hammered every time he drops back. Did Andrew Luck not like football in Indy? No, he liked football fine but he got tired of being physically abused every play because his offensive line let him get throttled every game.
I'd be scared shitless too playing behind this OL.

That's fine and well, but the OL protection is no excuse for Nuss making poor decisions based on pre-snap looks. Flynn breaks down two examples of RPOs where the OL had the run blocked up well and Nuss decides to throw the WR screen. He breaks down another example where all indicators are that the defense is in quarters coverage and explains that in quarters coverage in a 3 by 1 set you are going to have single coverage on the X receiver and you go to the X received 10 out of 10 times. Nuss doesn't even look in that direction. Nuss either does not understand these concepts or they are not being taught, but the OLs inability to pass block has nothing to do with it.

Nuss not using the fancy state of the art VR machine is crazy to me, especially considering that while he was in the building he saw JD5 use it obsessively and go from a so-so QB to a Heisman winner.

Thanks for that link I’ll spend the next three hours checking it out.

There's a little red slider on the bottom that you can use to scroll until you see them breaking down game film. You're welcome.

Argue with the PFF numbers, genius.

Here's my 65th "Nuss can't read defense" post to add to this.

Nuss is definitely PART of the problem. He hasn't played well this year.

Go watch the video. With a putrid OL, pre-snap reads are even more important. I expect my 5th year senior QB and son of an NFL OC to understand when the defense is bringing more than I can block, I have to get into a play where I can get the ball out to my hot receiver quickly. He makes almost no adjustments at the line pre-snap and is not adjusting his progressions based on what the defense is showing pre-snap.
People forget how bad our OL was in 2018. Then, in 2019 they were regarded as one of the best in the country. Much of that was due to Joe Burrow's ability to identify where the pressure was coming before the snap and get his offense checked into the correct play and make the correct read. There's more to this than just O-lineman getting blown up.

Then people that grade sports professionally and others that are ingrained in football are bafoons, since you think your opinion is correct?
No one said Nuss is perfect, but if you watched that game this weekend and came away thinking Nuss is the main problem, you have absolute tunnel-vision on the QB (which Flynn does because he's a former QB). That OL was God freaking awful all game long, especially the tackles. If Garrett misses a couple reads and throws for positive yards instead of running, we can survive that. What we can't survive is our QB getting hit within 2 seconds of the snap.

Go watch a guy that played QB for 8 years in the NFL breakdown the film. You might learn something.

Maybe we should have a qb that can make plays with his feet when things inevitably break down.

kelly seems like a complete arse his entire career. For someone that has coached a long time, there is shockingly little former players that speak about him.
He seems to only chew players out and that is only speed he has. There is a line between being a hardass coach and just being an a-hole, playing for the latter has to be miserable

I bet he's enjoying the NIL money he has received.

It's not just my opinion. It's shared by Matt Flynn who has probably spent a little more time in a film room and understands how to play the QB position better than 99% of the population.

The OL was bad. There's no getting around that. Nuss was also bad. The fact that the OL is terrible does not excuse mental mistakes from Nuss. Both can be bad, and both were bad.
