1/2 ton truck vs 3/4 ton

Has anyone ever switched from a 1/2 ton to a 3/4 ton truck and regretted it? if so, why?
I'm preparing to buy a new(er) truck and was planning on switching to 3/4 ton.
I have some new towing concerns but nothing super regular. So I'm questioning my choice to move up in size. Would anyone caution against it for some reason?
The price difference is negligible in my mind. The MPG is whatever because I don't drive a whole lot. The biggest negative I see is the size (when parking/maneuvering/whatever).
Thanks!!!

I have a crew cab long bed 3/4 ton and don't see myself ever having a different configuration truck. A 1 ton single wheel, probably. But a CCLB single wheel is where its at.
I've never found any issue with the size of fhe truck. If they made a crew cab 10' bed, id get that.
Far as 3/4 ton vs half ton, no comparison. You sacrifice ride quality for a vastly more capable truck. Pay attention to the payload capacity if you are looking at diesels - they can be extremely low with some configurations. Diesels should really all be 1 tons. Gas 3/4 tons are excellent trucks.

The 3/4 ton I had was a beast…just a lot more capable truck all around, as it had things like heavy springs, heavy brakes, transmission cooler, etc. The negative was that it had the ride of a log truck and was uncomfortably rough.
I have now dropped back to a 1/2 ton and frankly, like it a lot better.

I bought a 2025 Sierra diesel this time having always had 1/2 tons. First trip in it my wife said “you’ve got to get rid of this thing.” It rides ok on good roads but it lets you know when you are on a bad road. I find it steers like a boat and isn’t nimble or easy to maneuver. I’ll go back to the 1/2 ton asap.

went from a 1500 to 2500 and hated it. Impossible to park in the city, drank gas, ate up bearings and tires. The only thing it did better was tow.
got rid of that beast and bought a gladiator and now I’m good. Unless you have the need to tow heavy loads often stick with the 1/2 ton

Absolutely horrible as a daily driver.
What are you towing that needs more than a 1/2 ton?

Bought a tractor recently that I can't (safely) pull with a 1/2 ton. Don't really need to regularly except for maintenance though (once every two years or so).
Was originally doing it to be able to pull a camper but that idea kind of faded and the idea of the 3/4 ton didn't. And I'm reassessing.

I had a 3/4 ton years ago and didn’t enjoy the ride at all. My latest 1/2 ton is a Chevy Silverado High Country w/ the 6.2 (recall engine) but I love the truck and the ride! I put air bags on the rear end. I pull a 25’ Sea Hunt w/ it, 38hp tractor w/ loader and grader on it. It’s never had an issue pulling either.
I’m not giving up the ride as long as I can pull my toys with a 1/2 ton.

Had many F150/250s and several Chevy 1500s. Yes the 1500s ride better, but turning/parking I never noticed a difference in the trucks. I tow boats and skid steers, while a 1500 can certainly manage it, a 2500 suits my needs perfectly. I also don’t notice the difference between my 3/4 and the wife’s 1/2 ton on the road. Off-road probably a different story.

Purchased a new 1/2 ton gasser in 22, upgraded from my old 3/4 diesel. Can’t be happier. It’s more comfortable than I could’ve imagined. We take it in road trips and long drives quite a bit.
I also tow a smaller skid steer on the highway and around town not so frequently, but it handles just fine. My trailer has great breaks, so I take advantage of that and keep my distance on long hauls.
My vote would be go with 1/2 ton and enjoy the comforts and maneuverability. Some of the 3/4 ton trucks I’ve been in recently are very nice, but not worth the extra price.

Really appreciate the input guys. I may just end up sticking with 1/2 ton.

Night and day diff all for the worst unless you pulling cattle or horses. Don’t do it just to do it.

Traded trucks about a year ago and really really wanted a gas Ram 2500 but don't tow often or heavy enough to justify diesel. I couldn't get past the bad transmissions they had in the model years I was looking at and at the end of the day didn't really NEED a 3/4 ton on a regular enough basis. So I went with a newer model Tundra and have been very happy.
Fast Forward to a couple months ago, a buddy of mine made the same move but he did pull the trigger on the 3/4 and has had a lot of trouble from it. Not saying they're junk, just that my needs didn't offset the trouble I knew I'd have from one and DON'T have from my Tundra.

Almost every decent half ton with trailer brakes can tow 12-15k lbs pretty easily.
What tractor did you buy?

Stay with 1/2 ton unless absolutely need 3/4 ton for towing heavy loads.

This is horrible advice, ignore it.
If you tow anything of any size regularly, the 3/4 ton is worth it. The payload on a 1/2 ton is going to be around 1,500 lbs.
Your actual towable weight is likely only around 6k lbs depending on what else you have in the truck.
You can easily max out a 1/2 going on a fishing trip. 600lb hitch weight of the boat, cooler, 4 dudes, maxed out.

15k lbs behind any half ton is retarded. Diesel 3/4tons are usually rated 26k gross combined, which generally means 16k on the trailer, and that is retarded.
Towing 15k behind a 3/4 ton diesel is miserable if it isnt on a 40' spread axle gooseneck. I do it all the time. Behind a half ton? No frickin way. You might get there without wrecking and dying but its going to suck.
Terrible, terrible advice. The tow ratings on half tons are retarded. You cant hardly put the rated tow weights behind them without vastly exceeding payload capacity.

Don't be a fairy.
We've had this argument like a dozen times now.
A few months back a buddy's dad was too impatient to wait for his denali to tow his big tractor out to our area... So his goofy arse pulled it out here with his ridgeline.
Most of the older farmers around here use their older 4.7 tundras to pull their 5603s with implements in parish. With trailers thats 10-12k.
Would I pull that with an 06 half ton? Hell no. A new one...yeah.

Do tractor dealerships not have pick up options? Seems like I see this on here all the time, paying like $250 once a year for someone to pick up your tractor for repairs seems a lot better than buying a 3/4 ton just for once a year or 2 service.

Always go for the heavier duty truck. I would actually recommend going a step further and recommend the F350 or the Chevy equivalent. The price to move up to the 350 is about $1000 or so but what you can tow or haul is almost unlimited
